Aldi are cheap, but is the chocolate any good?

Who do you wise MNetters favour in the choc coin stakes?

I don't think Cadburys tastes very good any more. I think it's since the Kraft take over.

Thorntons! We tried the lidl imitation of a certain brand of chocolate rabbit last Easter. It was a disappointment.

I haven't tried them but Divine Fairtrade are supposed to be delicious.

OK we (DH & I) have just broken into the Aldi milk Dairy Fine choc coins I got last week (to stash away), for the purposes of scientific trial. 13 coins in pack, retail price 50p. From ingredients cocoa solids = 32% minimum and milk solids = 14% minimum.

Verdict: In our opinion, it tastes like Galaxy chocolate. Smooth in texture but not as sweet. Not the blandness or grittiness that you get with cooking chocolate or normal cheap chocolate. In terms of looks, it is a dull brown colour, it does not have a shiny glaze - DH says Dairy Milk is the same dull colour. We both agree it is better than most of the christmas chocolate coins we've tasted (tesco own brand last year) Good enough for us to finish the bag!

I like the m&s ones myself, but IME, kids don't really give a stuff and will eat any old crap!
Have never even been to an aldi so can't compare, but I have tasted sainsburys/Tescos and they taste of nothing, and just leave a greasy tasteless feel in your mouth. But as I say, the dc don't care.

Aldi chocolate is lovely. Much nicer than cadbury. For real luxury there's hotel chocolat

Divine is good. About the same price as M&S £1.99 a bag. Fairtrade obviously. My dcs don't like M&S chocolate much but we all agree that Sainsbury's is really not worth eating.

I got the lidl ones. They are £1.19 a bag and have loads in. I haven't tried them yet, but have had other lidl chocolate which has been nice.

The chocolate coins I saw in tesco were £1 and had 5 in the pack.

Divine choc coins are really delicious, the best in my vastly experienced gannet opinion. You get quite a lot in the pack, though they are not the cheapest (£1.85 - £2.20 last year).

My mum gave us some Lidl ones at the weekend and you do get masses and the chocolate is fine - quite creamy and chocolatey and not greasy or cheap vegetable fat tasting. They aren't as finely formed as the Divine coins though, if that kind of thing matters.

I do like the Divine choc too - I think the co-op have that type?

Oxfam shops sell all sorts of Divine chocolate products. I have treated myself to the dark choc coins! They also do boxes of dark choc after dinner mints which would be yummy. I think there are childrens chocolate novelties as well.

I am not a fan of Divine milk chocolate,I find it too sweet so M&S or Waitrose choc coins are the ones for me.
