A cork bath mat is a winning choice for families. It’s probably the most practical material if your little ones enjoy competitive splashing while in the bathtub as water can be drained off or absorbed easily. Cork mats won’t budge on your bathroom floor either. And you’ll also have one less thing to add to your washing pile as you can rinse cork down in the bath or shower. Not the most stylish option, but definitely a good pick for practicality!

How to choose the best bath mat

A bath mat is a good way of adding some style and personality to your bathroom – a room that’s often neglected when it comes to interior design. Depending on the size of your family and the age of your children, you’ll also need to consider practicality. Do you have small people at risk of slipping? Do you want a mat that you can throw in the washing machine or one that you can wipe-clean to to avoid adding to your laundry pile?

Here are some points to think about when shopping for a bath mat:

  • Will the size fit your floor area?

  • Is it non-slip?

  • Is it machine washable?

  • Is it anti-bacterial or is it prone to collecting dirt?

What's the best material for bath mats?

Choosing the right material for your bath mat largely depends on your personal preference, although there are some benefits to certain compositions. Mats made from 100% cotton offer a luxurious feel but you may prefer a harder surface like a water-resistant wooden duckboard or a cork mat, which are both very easy to keep clean. Some mats have an anti-slip latex or a rubber grip on the bottom which is a good idea if you have shiny tiles in your bathroom.

How often should bath mats be washed and can they be put in the tumble dryer?

Bath mats can be prone to collect fluff, dust, bacteria… and unwanted body hair (ew!), so it’s a good idea to shake out your mat regularly and wash it once a week with your towels. Mats with hard surfaces like bamboo and cork can be rinsed down. Check individual labels to see if you can tumble dry. It’s usually a no-go for rubber-backed mats.

What is the best bath mat to buy?

The Panda Bamboo Bath Mat is a sure-fire winner. It’s crafted to a high standard with bamboo cotton to feel super soft on your feet and it has natural anti-bacterial properties to boot. A great buy.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation from a real parent, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which bath mats discerning Mumsnet users had bought for their homes. We compiled a list of bath mats they recommended for being durable and offering value for money.

We then did some research across the wider web, looking at which bath mats had won accolades or been featured in ‘best buy’ lists across websites and print media, and what customer reviews said about them.

Having collated all that information, we picked the best bath mats we thought would make the best buys.
