How we tested the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow

I tested the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow alongside two other popular pregnancy pillows - the Dreamgenii Pregnancy Support and Feeding Pillow and the Babymoov Dream Belt during the second and third trimester of pregnancy (roughly 18 - 32 weeks).

During testing, I scored the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow out of five in many different criteria including: overall comfort, bump support, back support, hip/leg support, practicality, and value for money. I struggled with some lower back pain and sciatica throughout my pregnancy, so I was excited to try the bbhugme.

First impressions of the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow

The bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow comes highly recommended, and after trying it out, I understand why. Unlike other pillows, it prioritises comfort with its label-free, Velcro-free design (so no itchy or scratchy fabric in sight!). Made from a blend of 95% cotton and 5% spandex, its cover is luxuriously soft with a subtle stretch.

Filled with microbeads, the pillow offers a unique sandy texture while remaining remarkably lightweight. Its silicone clamps at each end allow for adjustable firmness, catering to individual preferences.

The other nice thing about this pillow, compared to other pillows I’ve seen and tested like the Dreamgenii Pregnancy Support and Feeding Pillow, is that it doesn’t look overly medical and could even double up as a stylish pillow for your sofa or bed. I chose a muted blue cover for mine, but there are a number to choose from to suit your style and taste.

Love love love my bbhugme. It's also so useful postpartum to prop you up in bed or on the sofa, for feeding etc... and the perfect position for watching TV or reading, it's just so comfy. DD is 21 months and now pregnant with my second and I've never gone a week without using it!

How big is the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow?

At first, the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow seemed large as I took it out of its reusable bag, stretching to 145cm with a 20cm width.

Manoeuvring it into a comfortable position under the duvet can be challenging due to its size. Yet, once covered with the cotton case, its tactile feel is delightful, making you forget its size as it feels great on the skin.

How easy is the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow to use?

One of the best things about this pregnancy pillow is that it’s very easy to use straight out of the box. Simply slide the cover on, which is easier to manage with a partner and you’re good to go. It also comes with a good-quality reusable bag which is helpful for storage or if you’re travelling with it.

Thanks to its versatility, you have the option to adjust the microbead filling by loosening the ends for a thinner pillow or tightening them to achieve a plumper feel.

Due to its length, it took a while to master turning over in bed without lifting the whole duvet and disturbing my husband in his sleep.

Fortunately, I've found a technique that works well for me: sliding my bottom underneath the pillow, which I find easier than lifting it over my body using my knees. However, if it happens to slip out of bed during the night, retrieving it and tucking it back under the covers can require a bit of effort.

Because it’s comfortable, tactile, and quite soothing, I used it most nights to support my hips and growing bump. I also used it to support my lower back while sitting up in bed and to elevate my legs while resting on the sofa.

Can you use the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow as a nursing pillow?

Whilst I haven’t tested this pillow out for breastfeeding yet, it’s been developed by real mums and healthcare professionals to support mums-to-be throughout pregnancy and during breastfeeding.

Although it might be a little big to lug around the house with a little one, I can see how it might help offer additional support during breastfeeding sessions.

Throughout my pregnancy, I also tried a U-shaped pillow, but it only provided support in one sleeping position, and the leg rest was too large for my hips. I missed the customisable comfort of the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow.

Does the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow offer good support?

Yes, it offers great support as it’s simple to adjust the shape and texture to accommodate and soothe whichever aches and pains you’re experiencing, particularly back pain or hip discomfort.

However, due to the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow’s length and size, it can take a little while to get into the comfiest position and it got caught under the duvet a few times.

How do you wash the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow?

The inner pillow shouldn't be washed in the washing machine. Removing stains on the inner pillow is best done with a damp cloth. The outer covers are machine washable at 40°C but it's best to hang to dry.

How does the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow compare with other maternity pillows?

Throughout my pregnancy, I also tried a U-shaped pillow, but it only provided support in one sleeping position, and the leg rest was too large for my hips. I missed the customisable comfort of the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow.

I also tested a wearable sleep support belt, which was more convenient for moving around in bed and useful if your partner is a light sleeper. However, it only offered support for the belly, whereas I particularly valued the hip support provided by the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow.

Are there any downsides to the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow?

When it comes to the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow, there are a few downsides to consider. Firstly, its design includes very long loose fabric at the end, which can pose a bit of a trip hazard, especially when moving it around. Additionally, unlike some other pregnancy pillows, it doesn't provide comprehensive all-round body support.

While it's not the largest pillow available, its size could still be a concern if you share a bed with a light sleeper. We tested it in a spacious king-size bed with a super king-size duvet, and even then, we found that it took up quite a bit of space.

Although the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow is made with cooling materials, I found it to be a little warm, even in the winter when I tested it. So, if you’re pregnant over the summertime, or generally a warm person, this pregnancy pillow might be too warm for you.

Is the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow good value for money?

The bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow is quite pricey and considered to be an investment as there are cheaper maternity pillows on the market. You’re also not going to be 100% sure if it’s the right one for you until you try it. The great thing is that because it’s so versatile and well-designed, most women find a way to use it to offer the right type of support and comfort during pregnancy.

Two of my pregnant friends swear by the bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow having used it throughout their pregnancies and on their postpartum journeys, and recommended I try it. In fact, it’s become such a feature in the bed that my one friend’s partner coyly refers to the pillow as the “Berlin Wall”.

If you’re on a tight budget, consider scouring FB Market Place or Vinted for a decent second-hand one.
