Of course nobody should be getting harassed on these apps or deleted for no reason so it's good that Tinder is tackling that. But isn't this to do with the conflict between trans ideology and how other people view things? For example, a transwoman who wants to date men might see herself as straight, but most straight men would not be interested because they are not attracted to male bodies.

The same goes for lesbians, they are attracted to female bodies because they are female homosexuals and same-sex attracted so most are going to want to filter out transwomen. There have been lots of posts online saying 'its transphobic to have a genital preference.' This denies people the choice of defining their own sexuality and it also inherently homophobic (and technically straight phobic, even though that's not really a word).

I think if the apps allowed people to filter by women/transwomen/men/transmen and allowed for the three sexualities across these groups then people could find others where there would be a genuine chance of attraction and connection. Forcing straight men and lesbians to have transwomen in their matches is not the right way of going about this, in my view. Everyone has the right to define their own sexuality and who they are and are not attracted to. And most people are attracted to one or both sexes, hence the terms heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual ie. not bigenderal etc.

FWRLurker · 13/11/2019 02:36

Yep.

I don’t even know why the F trans people (or really anyone) would want to get matched with people who are not and will never be attracted to them.

Just be honest. Eg “I’m trans and I want to date non trans women”. Then you’d be matched with those women who have searched “I’m a woman and I want to date trans women” Simples.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2019 02:43

That article is very light on detail...

bd67th · 13/11/2019 03:01

It's almost like trying to force monosexual people into accepting members of the sex they aren't interested in as potential sexual partners results in objection from the monosexual people. Funny, that...

it also inherently homophobic (and technically straight phobic, even though that's not really a word).

It hits lesbians really hard because their dating pool is so small and they don't have the option of going to a gay sauna[1] to get laid the way gay men do. A relatively small number of transwomen in their Tinder matches will make the signal-to-noise ratio so low as to render the app useless.

"Heterophobic"? Certainly, Tinder's decision not to allow people to filter matches on birth sex actively harms "good relations" between trans and non-trans people and so would contravene the EA2010 duty to "foster good relations" between people who have a characteristic and people who lack it, were Tinder a public body.

[1]: Why are there no lesbian saunas? I've looked and they don't seem to exist.

[1]: Why are there no lesbian saunas? I've looked and they don't seem to exist.

Because women prefer to get to know someone before getting naked with them? And are less interested in casual hookups for no-strings sex?

Because it would be massively dangerous to be seen entering, leaving or working at such an establishment as all the local rapists and fettishists would hang around outside waiting for a victim?

jay55 · 13/11/2019 06:02

I wonder how many of the banned profiles were male bodied people blocked by lesbians.

TheKrakening3 · 13/11/2019 06:10

Australia’s Evie Amati went on an axe rampage because apparently they felt shamed for being trans when they rocked up on a Tinder date with an unsuspecting lesbian. Well actually, they reacted in a typical MVAW way when they were told no by a woman.

Is Tinder actually wanting to make it easier for these highly threatening situations for women to occur?

Plus it would be impossible to keep men out. All they’d have to do would be claim to be lesbians.

And meanwhile, in India, Tinder recognise that females are harassed online and need extra protections put in place, so have changed the app so that women send the first message. Strange that they recognise the risks posed to females in India, by a minority of males, but not in the UK or Ireland. ConfusedHmm

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45638946

"By giving our female users the ability to exclusively send the first message if and when they want to, My Move provides women the autonomy to choose how to engage with their matches and empowers them to control their experiences," said Taru Kapoor, India's general manager for Match Group.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/11/2019 06:29

Nobody should be harassing anyone on social media. That being said, blocking people who you don't want to go out with on a dating app is not harrassment. When it comes to dating and sex people have the right to be as picky as they want.

NonnyMouse1337 · 13/11/2019 06:35

It's incel logic to demand that nobody else gets to define their sexuality and sexual attraction and preferences apart from trans people.

Nobody is owed sexual access in this world. Nobody.

It can be understandably hurtful and discouraging if most people aren't interested in dating you because you might be too fat / too short / unattractive etc. Many non-trans people have to experience such rejection, but manage to live their lives without demanding everyone else has to be forced or harassed into dating them. Only incels demand people should sleep with them even if they aren't attracted to them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/11/2019 06:43

What would you even be hoping to achieve by forcing someone who's not interested to meet up with you by not allowing them to filter you out as not a match? It's just going to be a waste of time and money for both parties.

I suspect a lot of trans people think they pass. So they think if people are forced to overcome their prejudices and see their profile or meet them the fact they are the wrong sex will be a minor issue that can be overcome.

A friend saw a group of lads express surprise when a young male transgender person "came out" as actually trans. Afterwards it was clear it was obvious but they were being polite.

I would not want trans people to be harassed, but surely it would give them a more accurate understanding if the lads had gone "yeah, we can tell" instead of "really? We hadn't realised!".

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/11/2019 07:11

I'm guessing people are hoping that an in person meeting will somehow result in being able to pressure people into continuing on to a relationship? It won't though, and if it did that would be wrong, and surely being rejected online stings less than having it happen in person in a public place where other people can witness it.

NonnyMouse1337 · 13/11/2019 07:12

Boss Elie Seidman said the unfair complaints had been an "unforeseen consequence" of Tinder's policy that its users should not be able to filter out trans people from the profiles they are shown as potential matches.

Hahaha!!! Not an unforeseen consequence at all!!

Men are stopped from being able to filter out transwomen, so they all report the profiles and the system automatically bans profiles that receive the most complaints, therefore the trans profiles are being affected because what did you expect? You think men are as docile as women when it comes to having their boundaries violated? No way. Forcing men to interact with trans women will lead to more verbal abuse.

BarbaraStrozzi · 13/11/2019 07:38

Also have tinder thought through how dangerous this is likely to be for transwomen attracted to men? Because, let's face it, male people are statistically the ones much more likely to be perpetrating violence and hugely more likely to be the ones perpetrating sexual violence. Better to be filtered out by a psychopathic nutter with a visceral aversion to penises other than his own than to have him discover it in person, I would have thought.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 13/11/2019 07:47

It must be very hard to get dates under certain circumstances...not just being trans

But people need to be honest, if not at the first swipe right then definitely BEFORE the date

A friend of a friend went in a date, transwoman walked in to the busy pub looking very unlike her photo, he said ‘you’re fucking kidding me’ and walked straight out!

I mean how embarrassing, would you not want to save yourself from that potential embarrassment or maybe even violence?

BlouseAndSkirt · 13/11/2019 07:53

Tinder say complaints are as a result of an “unforeseen consequence of Tinder's policy that its users should not be able to filter out trans people from the profiles they are shown as potential matches”.

Umm, they didn’t foresee that people might have string preferences based on sex rather than gender? Are the managers of Tinder 100% happy to start a sexual relationship with a person based on the clothes they wear rather than the body beneath?

“As a trans woman, it can be dangerous to meet people in the real world because you never know how someone might react to my gender identity.”

Well yes, I am sure that this is an issue. And women (lesbians) might well find internet dating dangerous where they are expected to hook up with male bodied people who believe their sex-based orientation is not valid.

Tinder have not served anyone well.

Abuse at Trans Tinder users because they are trans is wholly unacceptable, of course. But users giving feedback feeling duped by Trans profiles; a situation created by Tinder.

BlouseAndSkirt · 13/11/2019 08:03

From the Tinder article I am confused about what they are going to do. Ban anyone who is not happy that they have found themselves on a date with a person of the opposite body to their sexuality? Ban lesbians who are not prepared to date male bodied people?

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 13/11/2019 08:07

“As a trans woman, it can be dangerous to meet people in the real world because you never know how someone might react to my gender identity.”

Well yes, people do tend to react strongly to those who dupe them into dates under false pretences.

That's why you should be honest about who you are before meeting up in real life. And why dating apps should allow people the option of 'no trans' so your time isn't wasted on people who will never be interested in you.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/11/2019 08:08

If they ban everyone whose sexual preferences are based on the sex of their potential partner then they'll be out of business quicker than you can say "unforseen consequences".

HappyPunky · 13/11/2019 08:18

Can you filter by height on tinder? I've never used it but I've seen it on other dating sites.

I know men hate it and lie but based on average heights, trans people can be excluded that way.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 13/11/2019 08:25

I'm not sure filtering by height would be very effective. In my corner of the world a lot of men are 5'4"/5'5". You'd have to go very low to avoid XY trans people. In other places people are much taller and the opposite problem would arise.

It really would be fairer to everyone to just be able to say 'no trans'.
