My MP thinks self ID is ridiculous

MyMPfinallyreplied · 10/10/2018 22:23

So I finally got a reply from my MP - I'd actually given up hope. He's Conservative, very right wing, and I disagree with a lot of his voting record. However, I wrote in the vain hope that he would actually get it. He's not on twitter and replies with actual letters so takes a while to get hold of.

I never expected him to quote the Pope in his reply (he's C of E). I haven't been able to post that part as he uses my name close by, but it made me smile.

This all makes for strange bedfellows.

what does the pope have to say on the matter?

scotsheather · 10/10/2018 22:27

It is mostly the right wing tories it seems who get it. David Davies and so on. We need more in the center ground on our side as I don't particularly want aligned with the ukip-py type. Mine is SNP so zero chance.

Great reply you got though.

InfidelForever · 10/10/2018 22:34

Excellent response. For the record the Pope is very much against teaching gender theory in schools

MyMPfinallyreplied · 10/10/2018 22:39

Pope Benedict - we are moving towards a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognise anything as definitive and has its highest values in one's own ego and one's own desires.

JackyHolyoake · 10/10/2018 22:39

I rather suspect my MP [a Conservative] would respond in the same vein ...

GreyPJs · 10/10/2018 22:40

Fantastic letter.

Does he sign with a lovely blue fountain pen?

Redkeyboard · 10/10/2018 22:41

I honestly don’t think that many MPs agree with dropping the medical requirements.

MyMPfinallyreplied · 10/10/2018 22:43

He does indeed - he also writes the date in with the same lovely pen.

I'm not sure of the etiquette of this: I presume since he wrote to me he's happy with his views being on record, so do I name him here and we sigh collectively that our support comes from as far right as you can get in the Conservative Party?

R0wantrees · 10/10/2018 23:15

There is a real danger that politicians from the right wing (often Brexit supporting) of the Conservative party will gain considerable political capital unless more MPs from other parties and other positions with the Conservatives start standing up soon.

Thank goodness for Maria Miller and Penny Mordant! Wink

NameChangedAgain18 · 10/10/2018 23:28

I would advise people not to name supportive MPs on here. There will be a pile-on from TRAs, and that might put other MPs off raising concerns with self-id.

JaniceBattersby · 10/10/2018 23:32

On the contrary. MPs should be absolutely transparent about their views on all relevant subjects. No MP would expect a letter written to a constituent to remain private. They’d always write it with the expectation it would end up in the public domain.

RepealtheGRA · 10/10/2018 23:32

I wouldn’t name on here but contact WPUK and/or FPFW and let them know.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 10/10/2018 23:33

Yes please do not name.

GreyPJs · 10/10/2018 23:49

I think I’ve worked for him 😄

MyMPfinallyreplied · 11/10/2018 00:14

Really Grey? In his capacity as MP or before?

Which bit gives it away? Being able to quote Pope Benedict? (It's not JRM in case anyone was wondering)

terryleather · 11/10/2018 00:14

Looks like the pope can see PoMo/Queer Theory bs for what it is.

I never thought I'd see the day where I'm mouthing " goan yersel'!!!" to something the Pope said Confused

MyMPfinallyreplied · 11/10/2018 00:22

I won't name on here but I'll send a copy to WPUK/FPFW. I very much doubt TRAs would pile on though - the man isn't on Twitter and they're not going to go out to the sticks - it's a rural constituency, far too much effort!

OP posts:
GreyPJs · 11/10/2018 00:38

Ah, the one I’m thinking of isn’t rural. He has a very similar outlook; obviously there are lots of lovely fountain pens in HoC! 😁

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/10/2018 01:09

Well done OP! What did you say in your letter? It clearly impressed him.

RedToothBrush · 11/10/2018 07:19

So we now have quite a number of Tory MPs saying they think self ID is a pile of crock.

Which means that if the government decide to press on with this they will only get it through because of opposition support.

Labour are digging in their heels over every other area of politics and taking every opportunity they possibly can as a victory to embarrass the government.

Yet when it comes to self ID, you can bet they'll be storming the chamber to vote with the government. And the government will be smirking going 'look how woke we are! We support Womxn of all kinds. We destroyed women to do it, but go us'.

RepealtheGRA · 11/10/2018 07:50

I honestly don’t think the tories are stupid enough to push self ID through. Tories objected to the original GRA, foreseeing many of the issues we’re facing today. Labour passed it anyway, despite having all the problems pointed out to them. They should beat labour to death with that fact.

AngryAttackKittens · 11/10/2018 07:56

I've said this before but will say it again - I'm a leftie from a family of Labour voters, my dad is a former union man, so are some of my uncles, and even so, I would hold my nose and vote Tory if I had to if they promised to stop this madness.

Now think how many people from the middle of the political spectrum they could pick up votes from if they showed some backbone on this issue.

Labour - you should be ashamed of yourselves, and will have to work hard to make women forgive the extent to which you've betrayed us over this issue. If you want women's votes, earn them.

nauticant · 11/10/2018 08:01

Well done OP.

Being realistic, just about any proposed law change in this area that can be spun as "pro-trans"* will be supported by Labour, the SNP, the LibDems, and "we don't want to be meanies" Conservatives. It would most likely pass the House of Commons.

  • For example beneficial to those without gender dysphoria but detrimental to those with.
Redkeyboard · 11/10/2018 08:06

Which means that if the government decide to press on with this they will only get it through because of opposition support.

I’m not sure enough MPs would be convinced, even then.
