Relieved to read this morning that the appeal court has found OP guilty of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, although no word on whether he will be returned to prison.

OP posts:

Me too.
It's disgusting how people are treated differently in courts of law just because they have an air of "celebrity" about them.
If that was anyone else in the dock, they would be receiving a hefty sentence without question. I watched a documentary a while back, and South African prisons are notoriously brutal....but god forbid they subject their Paralympic star to that Hmm

It's interesting how arguments used by MNers on previous threads to say he was guilty of murder were also those used by the appeal judge.

we are sensible, so is the judge

His sentence is going to be reviewed.

From a legal standpoint the original decision was obviously wrong beyond belief. A-level law standard stuff.

The right decision, even if you believe his intruder story, he still shot to kill.
It's seems very likely he'll go back to prison.

Lets see if his legal team appeal this.....

Alledgedly funds are very low now and he doesnt have the means to pay for the legal fees

He will have to appear before Judge Masipa again for sentencing for murder with criminal intent.

A little bit of justice for Reeva and her family.

How did that happen? Wasn't he stinking rich?

I hope he won't get out of it this time. Because the original decision was really ridiculous.

He sold his house (the one in which he shot Reeva) plus used up all of his funds on legal fees apparently.

I am not sure if it was reported on international news, but his release earlier this year was delayed, they said that the parole board were premature in releasing him into house arrest after only serving 10 months of his sentence.

This was during the month which we celebrate Womens Month, and then there is a period of 16 days in which crimes against women are highlighted by '16 days of activism for no violence against women and children' campaign which runs during the time he was due to be released. So we believe that this is the reason for that delay. How can someone be released who had shot and killed his girlfriend right in the middle of a non violence campaign...

Some MNers were convinced that the Court engineered this all on purpose. That a murder conviction would have been difficult to get in the beginning, and possibly lost on appeal. Whereas he would definitely spend time in jail if the original conviction was for a 'lesser' crime and a appeal could only get him more time inside. The feeling seemed to be that Thokozile Masipa isn't stupid and did what had to be done. I wonder if that's what happened.

I said in the bloody threads that the firearm he used, with the ammunition he chose (which is illegal, even in SA) and where he had to get it from in the room, that there was no way he didn't know that a) it was Reeva in the bathroom and b) that he was going to kill her.

Sentencing will be in Jan/Feb apparently and he's looking at about 15 years. Still not long enough but I big improvement.

Report

a big improvement.

Is that serving 15 years, or 15 years with time served taken into account and a ridiculous amount off for 'good behaviour'? Chances are his career is over. Which I hope is some comfort to Reeva's family.

Such good news.

RIP Reeva.

IShouldBeSoLurky · 03/12/2015 19:59

I think his career is over anyway tbh.

Playswell IIRC the illegal ammunition wasn't used to shoot Reeva - it was just brought in evidence that he liked playing around with it at shooting ranges.

Anyway, a good result and I hope some relief for her family.

My heart goes put to poor Reeva, her family, and all those who have lost women to violent men.

Good news I hope he goes down and stays down.

OP is 29, an Olympian and he murdered someone. He knew what jail was like in SA. If it's true that the Black majority hate the people who subjugated, killed, brutalised and abused them for centuries whites, he knew that too.

Possibly not shooting an unarmed person would have prevented his incarceration.

Sorry not rape culture. Minimization of violence against women.
