Adam Hills' response to Joan Rivers

Background: Joan Rivers met Adele at the Oscars. She was then interviewed on and made nasty remarks about her weight.
Adam Hills, slams her and her comments on last Friday's .

I think Adam was right to call her out BUT, mocking Joan for her appearance and surgeries?

I'm increasingly aware of this happening, someone defending a woman being criticised for her looks by criticising the other person's looks.

Sorry if I'm not articulating this very well!

Totally agree that no-one should be criticised for their looks, even if they've been stupid enough to do the same to someone else. Having said that, I watched the clip and don't think Adam Hills was doing that - think he was criticising what a hypocrite Joan Rivers is because she's so bothered about the way she looks, getting all the plastic surgery. The 'bitter mole' comment could have been about her looks or about her personality, not sure. Don't think he said anything wrong tbh - Joan Rivers shouldn't have been so vile about Adele anyway but when she's so nipped and tucked herself (so obviously not happy with the way she looks) it's even worse and she deserved to be mocked as a hypocrite.

Joan Rivers was vile, what an awful woman. I think Adam Hill dealt with her beautifully plus he talked about positive role models for girls.
I thought he was excellent and pretty much vocalised what I felt about watching Joan Rivers.

I don't think he was mocking Joan for her appearance, he was just merely pointing out she only looks the way she does, because she's spent so much money on being nipped and tucked.

I don't think he was insulting her particularly, or at least no more than she deserved. One of the reasons her comments were so shocking is because, like he pointed out, she's had so much surgery.

I love Adam Hills. And think he dealt with this fantastically, with enough comedy to make it hard hitting whilst stating making his point very clearly. Agreed with every word he said.

And Joan Rivers was utterly vile.

Another one here who doesn't think he was making fun of Joan Rivers' appearance but highlighting her hypocracy.

Very well done I think

Agree with Bubblegum. I think he got his point across really well with no mysogyny.

Take note Jimmy Carr et al.

Agree with the other posters. He was spot-on and quite feministy when he pointed out that here was a decent role-model for his daughters and the last thing he needed was for her looks to be slated.

Besides Joan Rivers was being a hypocrite. I mean who is she to act like she knows what looks good? Horrid person.

If you think he was good on this, try he has on women's magazines!

she's such a cock. she makes her whole living making women feel bad about themselves. and I dont care if it is unfemininist to say, but i don't know where she thinks she got the right because she looks like an old boot. she's on my list of "I'm just waiting for them to keel over" so their brand of 'humor' can die out with them.

Oh I love Adam Hills and I agree that he wasn't slating Joan's looks, that rant (and the magazine one) was perfectly appropriate for the situation.

Yeah, I liked his call out - he did it very well. Would have liked a woman to do it though. Something about a guy taking the highground over two women sits uneasy with me.

Thanks for all your replies :)

I'm fairly new to feminism, I think I'm hyper-sensitive to everything.

I love that magazine clip, "they make you feel like shit, so you buy shit" - so true!

babanouche I know what you mean. A woman calling out Joan's BS would've been the perfect scenario.
