in my work i work with very highly qualified academics, i am support staff. they have all recently started these classes and burlesque. I have recently got very interested in the feminism on MN. I am saddened these woman are doing this ,they have everything going for them! Am i wrong? be gentle i am a learner
Margot I've done yoga a lot and believe me, I couldn't do half of this stuff.
yy wilsonfrickett
exactly that
so sorry about your friend kim.
I'm still of the opinion that the intent matters. Pretending to be a stripper or performing for the male gaze was the furthest thing from my mind. I find the gym boring. It's fun to spin round upside down. That's my main reason for doing the classes.
IMO, it's the "root" that matters. Where it came from. How stuff like pole dancing (that originated in the sex industry) is being normalised in society. Yes, people have always swung around ropes, and slippery poles (anyone seen a team of laughing and mostly drunk people climbing a greasy pole...now that is a laugh) and stuff. But what we are talking about here is something very different.
Has there been a "Pole dancing gift set" for 8yo's in Tesco yet ? If not, there will be soon.
Would people think belly dancing for fitness is anti feminist? I've started private lessons recently and it's very athletic but very visual as well. But I enjoy it because of the whole 'gorgeous even if your fat' thing.
but Wilson, the only reason you need to do that stuff, is to pole dance
i don't think many of our top women athletes put pole dancing onto their schedule

Yes here. There are also pole dancing classes for children.
Belly dancing might have been appropriated for displays for men to look at, but it's culturally more intended by women for women, I think.
There are also male belly dancers, but afaik pole dancing isn't something marketed at men as participants.
I thought so, GetAll
What a load of bollocks it all is.
Prostitution is probably good for fitness too - all that walking the streets and frantic shagging
GetAll I don't think the item you linked to looks aimed at children, actually.
How many men do you have in your class Moomie?
GetAll I don't think the item you linked to looks aimed at children, actually.
Well they were forced to remove it from the 'toys and games' section of their website and move it to 'Fitness Accessories' so someone thought it was I guess..
That product you linked to is exactly what I'm talking about though GetAll, coming as it does with its handy '100 dance dollars'. That's exactly what I mean about intent. The intent there is to link the pole to dancing for money. If you take that intent away then it's just a pole.
Unlike lapdancing - which is always 'for' men, 'by' women - pole dancing can be just dancing if the intent, content and audience is right.
I wonder why people don't dance around telegraph poles, high jump poles, flag poles etc ?
100 dance dollars
In fairness I don't actually think that's intended for children
Or fireman round their poles, AF. You'd think it would be tempting, if it's just for Fitness.
of course, BTP
Firemen are supposed to maintain a certain level of physical fitness, aren't they ?
Perfect...they have the ideal fitness solution right there in the station
you can't dance round a telegraph pole, you'd get dog piss all up your fishnets

And splinters in your bits
ah, but wilson, your bits would not be available for splinter insertion
...if pole dancing were just for fitness
you would be pole dancing around a telegraph pole in your duffel coat, Moon boots and woolly tights, wouldn't you, bits very firmly out of reach of splinters ?
You are so right, I would probably wear my padded cycling shorts as well, thus adding a further layer of protection.
You never know, it could become the new Couch to 5k <eyes telegraph pole outside house>
