" i dont care how many feet it's got!!! just get rid of it!"

my wife on being told that the creepy crawly she wants me to remove from the bedroom floor is actually a centipied not a millipied.

I'm going to ask you to remember the prostituted, the homeless, the battered, the raped, the tortured, the murdered, the raped-then-murdered, the murdered-then-raped; and I am going to ask you to remember the photographed, the ones that any or all of the above happened to and it was photographed and now the photographs are for sale in our free countries. I want you to think about those who have been hurt for the fun, the entertainment, the so-called speech of others; those who have been hurt for profit, for the financial benefit of pimps and entrepreneurs. I want you to remember the perpetrator and I am going to ask you to remember the victims: not just tonight but tomorrow and the next day. I want you to find a way to include them the perpetrators and the victims in what you do, how you think, how you act, what you care about, what your life means to you.

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.

meow - It's very sweet that you find your wife's anxiety over a centipede "inspirational". Sappho was mooning over a female superior who was in the process of seducing a male, so I'm afraid I didn't find that particularly inspirational. The fact that she was a world-famous poet back then could be, I guess.

Love that Rebecca West quote, Margery! I had it on a postcard - should look for another :)

I've just picked these out after a fascinating Google:

Nobody will ever win the Battle of the Sexes. There's just too much fraternizing with the enemy. Henry Kissinger

The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it. Roseanne Barr

Lt. Ellen Ripley from Aliens 3 when talking to a space ship inmate:

"Ripley: I just wanted to, um, say thanks for what you said at the funeral. My friends would have appreciated it.
Dillon: Yeah, well you don't wanna know me, lady. I'm a murderer and rapist of women.
Ripley: Really?
[pause]
Ripley: Well, I guess I must make you nervous.

"Dat man ober dar say dat womin needs to be helped into carriages, and lifted ober ditches, and to hab de best place everywhar. Nobody eber helps me into carriages, or ober mud-puddles, or gibs me any best place!" And raising herself to her full height, and her voice to a pitch like rolling thunder, she asked. 'And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! (and she bared her right arm to the shoulder, showing her tremendous muscular power). I have ploughed, and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man – when I could get it – and bear de lash as well! And ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen chilern, and seen 'em mos' all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?"

--Sojourner Truth, Women's Convention in Akron, Ohio, May 29, 1851

Probably somewhat embellished, but it's the most widely repeated version.

Women have been taught that, for us, the earth is flat, and that if we venture out, we will fall off the edge. Some of us have ventured out nevertheless, and so far we have not fallen off. It is my faith, my feminist faith, that we will not. - Andrea Dworkin
