This is not strictly a feminist issue but I thought it was an appropriate thread in which to note the death of a very brave female journalist.

Sunday Times foreign correspondent Marie Colvin and French photographer Reme Ochlik have been killed by Syrian shelling in Homs. Colvin's death came shortly after the BBC showed her report yesterday on the bombing and shelling in the city - a report in which she gave witness to the death of a baby killed by shelling.

It is important IMO to acknowledge that without journalists like Marie Colvin (who lost the sight of an eye reporting an earlier conflict) the world would know less about the horrors of war and the actions of dictators.

48 journalists were killed in 2011 in the course of their work - a fact that is sometimes overlooked in criticism of the media.

i am absolutely gutted at this news

been following Marie Colvin since I was a teenager and she wrote some pieces for Marie Claire magazine.

i remember when she lost her sight in one eye and was shocked and amazed then that she carried on.

a true inspiration and I am so very sad tonight.

the Channel 4 news tonight was heartbreaking.

RIP Marie

Assad has drawn the eyes of the world to his crimes by doing this.

Very sad. An incredibly brave woman.

So sad. Sad i followed her articles for many years until we left the UK.
I was expecting it to be headline news here (Germany) but it got a pathetic 30 seconds on the main evening news. Was shocked that the whole world isnt sitting up & realising what atrocities are going on there.
RIP Marie
