This is a subject I discussed with a couple of people at FEM 11 on Saturday - the very obvious link between 'sexy' clothing for young girls and the objectification of women that has become so mainstream in our media, and how damaging that is to women's psyches for a whole host of reasons. There are also a number of really good links in the article.

The Lolita Effect

As a mother to two girls under 5 I find the whole thing horrific. I am at the stage where |I am really struggling with the whole Disney princess thing. my daughter has been to eight (!) birthday parties recently and at all bar one of them she was required to dress like a princess. I have to say I managed to dodge this issue by encouraging her to dress as other things (there was normally a 'boys' choice) but going to parties dressed a pirate while the other girls are in revealing pink nylon is starting to be problematic.
How the hell are young girls going to learn the vast excitingness of the world if everything is limited to pink fluff and things they can't climb a bouncy castle in?

And this is a good book about sexualisation of girls: www.bookdepository.com/Getting-Real-Melinda-Tankard-Reist/9781876756758

Melinda Tankard Reist is an Australian women's advocate, check out her website too.
