Discuss?

Particularly if anyone saw last nights episode that my 11 year old was adamant she had to watch. Lots of young women desparate to get in to the modelling industry having choclate poured over their naked bodies whilst they posed seductivly.
They then all line up while several judges tell them who did it best.

One girl is critacised and she speaks up to ay she tried her best... she is shouted down by everyone and told she is cocky..

Good god.

I am usually a BNTM and ANTM addict, but this series has been pretty horrible.

I stopped watching after an early photo shoot where the girls had to pose in twos in their underwear with a male model and kiss/grope each other.

Some of them felt uncomfortable doing but were just told in judging that their photos were great so don't worry about it

I felt really proud of the girl who decided that modelling wasn't for her after this and left the competition to go and be a teacher!

I saw this weeks episode and thought 'not again' tbh, more nakedness and sexy pouting.
Pretty depressing really, especially if it makes young girls who want to be models think this is what its all about.

These are all stupid programmes, watched only by the young/stupid and (worryingly, given their content) impressionable.

Encourage your daughter to watch something else.

I watched most series of A/BNTM and don't consider myself stupid or particularly young...

"I stopped watching after an early photo shoot where the girls had to pose in twos in their underwear with a male model and kiss/grope each other."

I saw that and was . It really was going too far.

I prefer ANTM. They do at least make a token effort to promote the idea that girls of different appearance and ethnicity are beautiful. I remember seeing an interview with Tyra Banks where she talked about a book she wrote about positive body image, and she's done things like appearing on her show without her weave and with no makeup.

Modelling is a weird business. Whenever I watch NTM, DP always says how surprised he is at some of the contestants. 'Model' beauty seems to be different from conventional beauty.

My dp says the same about the contestants, although most of the british girls seem to be 'pretty' whereas the american girls are more 'model beautiful'.

I prefer ANTM too, I like Tyra Banks. Don't really think Elle MacPherson (?) has much about her, maybe thats why they are going down the 'sexy girls kissing/covered in chocolate' route with this series, to get people to watch it?

how is chocolate anything to do with modelling??!!

I do encourage her to watch something else but she is only my step daughter so I dont get any say when shes at her mums. Her mum loves this kind of trash and hopes her daughter will be on it one day... jolly good.

So I watch stuff with her so I can give a running comentary from a feminist point of view.

she thinks im the most boring woman to have ever lived, and pretty irratating. But I dont care. I'm not there to be her friend.

Austrailias NTM is . The girls are forever in nude/seductive/risque poses and the majority of them are under 18 years old. Some are still at school.

I remember watching America's top model a couple of times and I remember one girl, who was clearly the most beautiful there, just gorgeous, the clear winner. Anyway, she walked out halfway through, she just thought the whole thing was a meatmarket.
The judges, including ex-model Christy Turlington, basically all laid into her and attacked her for about 30 mins, saying she was a loser etc. All because the girl had the self-esteem to put limits on what was acceptable.

or maybe it was Tyra Banks, not Turlington ???!

Thats awful Sakura, NTM seems to be like a boot camp to thrash out any kind of sense of self or boundaries.. Im suprised that celebrities endorse it to be honest.
