I've always enjoyed taking photos and I would love to get into it a bit more seriously. At some point I'd like to do a course but in the mean time what would be a good book for an amatuer??

TIA

What type of photography ? compact/ Point and shoot or SLR ? For both types there are so many great books that can teach you the basics - just look on Amazon.

However, if you are looking to get to know all the basics of how to use your SLR in just a weekend I would wholeheartedly recommend a course I did in London by Nigel Wilson. www.photographycourses.org.uk Looking at his website I'm sorry to say his prices seem to have gone up since I did the course 2 years ago. However you do walk away with a clear understanding of all the basic theory and oodles of passion to try out everything you know which otherwise would take many laborious and tedious hours of trying to trying to understand from the books.

Just to do a comparison - I also signed up at about the same time for a evening class at the local college to further my understanding of SLR photography - it was so bad and so slow that I left after only 3 sessions, having paid up front for a 16 week course.

Seems Nigel is doing a point and shoot class too now...

I wantt it to become a more serios hobby so I'm thinking SLR. Thanks for the link those courses look fab!

Interesting that you felt local evening classes were slow I must admit I would much prefer an intensive course
