Trying to 'theme' my upcoming trip.

I've already watched the films The Departed, Mystic River, that RedSox baseball version of Fever Pitch, Gone Baby Gone.

Now I need some novels, although I suppose the novels those films came from are good?

Dennis Lehane wrote Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. Gone Baby Gone is part of a detective series set in Boston, the whole series is excellent. I've just started reading his new book, The Given Day, which is set in Boston in the 1920's.

I second the Dennis Lehane series. I've just discovered his books and am currently reading my way through his Kenzie and Gennaro detective series (the film Gone Baby Gone is based on one of his novels). 'Darkness Take my Hand', 'Sacred', 'A Drink Before The War', 'Prayers For Rain'. All are set in Boston.

'Make Way For Ducklings' is a children's book, if you are taking the dc with you. It is apparently a true story and there is a little statue to it in the park.

I lived north of Boston about 16 years ago, near the town where The Perfect Storm was based, that happened the winter before I arrived.

Um is it Robert B Parker who sets his detective novels in Boston?
