World Book Night 2013

Has anyone applied to be a giver? And if you have, have you heard back yet? I did it the year before last & loved it so applied again this year but will be a bit on the miserable side if I'm not a giver this time.

So, who applied, for what books and why?

I haven't applied, but hijacking the thread slightly , I was browsing books in a charity shop last week and found two pristine, unread paperbacks that a giver must have given out to someone last year. That made me feel sad that whoever it was who received them couldn't be bothered to read them, or at least try.

That sort of thing would put me off being a giver. I'd want to follow up each book and make sure they had been read :(

On that note, I still have quite a few books from last time left I got the flu & couldn't finish giving them out -hence why I am so desperate to do it properly this time round! Would any MN-ers like a copy of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie? It's absolutely fantastic! :) if you pm me addresses I will post them to you!

Yes, I'm a giver

I'm giving away copies of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency to parents in the children's hospital where I'm a volunteer. I chose that book as I thought it would be a cheerful, easy read for people having a stressful time.

Older children at the village school (I do reading sessions with them quite often) and hopefully in the hospital in town - my daddy was treated there and it's so depressing - I think (I hope!) that books would be a welcome addition...and like you said, a cheerful and easy read I'd really like to do something positive there anyway, they were so kind to us, especially at the end. I'm hoping book karma is a real 'thing'. Also (rather selfishly) if I don't go back there now I think I'll probably just never go near a hospital again - I need a reason and this is a nice one

I got my email to say I'm a giver too, Woohoo! I'm giving 'me before you - Jojo Moyes'. I loved the book and am happy to recommend it to anyone. I'm a teacher, so will give mine to some teachers and support staff, some of my A level students who I think will appreciate it, and some of my family have woefully poor opinions of books and reading so I'll possibly give a few to those too. I can't wait!

I'm a giver too! Although I didn't get my first choice which was the Jeanette Winterson, I will be giving out copies of Rose Tremain's 'The Long Road'. Very excited!!

I found out this morning that I'm an 'Institutional Giver' which basically means I get lots of lovely books to do something nice with in my library. I'm thinking of having a Saturday afternoon tea party and everyone who comes gets a book. Or if I'm feeling brave I might try and get a market stall and give them out there. Such fun!

I'm a giver too! I'll be giving out copies of Treasure Island at our local primary school. I think we are planning to get the children to nominate an adult (parent,grandparent,aunt etc.) and then we'll do a draw to find the lucky 20.

I'm giving out copies of Jackie Kay's memoir, Red Dust Road. Jackie Kay is a poet and novelist/short story writer, brought up by a white adoptive family but born to a white Scottish mother and a black Nigerian father. The memoir is about finding and meeting her birth family.

We're meant to give copies away to people who aren't other avid readers like ourselves, but need some encouragement to pick up a book. I'm planning to give them to parents in the school playground, I think.

Hello -I don't really belong here but found the thread via a google search. I am giving away the Andy McNab quick-read " Last Night Another Soldier" on World Book Night in April. I feel it would be more effective to join with other givers and make a bigger "event" which might get some publicity so please contact me if you would like to explore potential for three or four of us to get together ?
