Holiday reads

I had some brilliant recommendations the last time I asked this question, so I thought I'd have another go!

Three weeks in Florida at Easter. Am swooning just thinking about it. Obviously loads to do but I intend to make sure that one of those things is going to involve me plus my Kindle, some sunshine, maybe a beer/margarita and some Jimmy Buffett every single day for at least one hour!

I have no limit on how many books I can take. How did I manage before the Kindle? I'd love to take a wide variety of stuff. Something really meaty that takes ages and makes me consider life should be included. I don't really like novels that involve sexy yet quirky thirty-somethings waiting for Mr Right or anything that involves graphic recounts of childhood abuses.

Apart from that, I'm an open book, haha. And would love to hear your recommendations.

You've just made me realise that I haven't read any good books for ages .
If you haven't read it already, the last book I read that I would recommend was Life of Pi.
I also enjoyed Let's Not Go To The Dogs Tonight. An autobiography of the author's childhood in Zimbabwe. It was fascinating and well written.
I will try and think of some more. ..

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - twisted thriller
My Dear I wanted to tell you by Louisa Young - 1st world war story, kind of a romance bu also deals with the first attempts at plastic surgery on soldiers.

My Dear I Wanted To Tell You is brilliant, but you need quite a strong stomach for the bits about the plastic surgery. It's definitely not chick-lit, very well-written, definitely recommend.

Gone Girl - fab too. Also, The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey, The Hundred Year Old Man by Jonas Jonasson, Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Wonder by R J Palacio.

I have recently loved - really loved! - The Silver Linings Playbook.

I loved Secret Life of Bees. Also Cold Comfort Farm which made me laugh out loud. Just about to start Gone Girl, really looking forward to it!

I like to read books set in the place I'm visiting. Racking my brains for books set in Florida... Maybe Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God? That's a great book.

Rules of Civility was my fave read of 2012. Funny, smart, warm, generally bloody superb.

Must read some Carl Hiaasen, set in florida, sick puppy, and a dozen others.. i read 3 last time i was there, laugh out loud. i am off to miami on friday, will load up my kindle with some ideas on this list, thank you!
