Trainers for all occasions

I've recently joined the gym, doing 20mins cardio followed by some weights and sit up type exercises. Also doing a couple of Zumba/ body attack classes.
I need a really good supportive pair of trainers. A couple of years ago I broke my foot and due to the awful care I recieved from the St. John's ambulance staff at the event I was told to walk on it for three days. By this time part of my fifth metatarsal had broken off. So now I get a lot of pain after exercising.
I've heard of some shops which have machines where they tell you which trainers are best but not sure if this is an urban myth or they actually do exist.

Shops will have a running machine to test whether you under or over pronate. This could help you avoid shin splints mainly.

With your injuries I would definitely go to a specialist sport shop and discuss your need for the shoes e.g. Running, cross training and tell them about any issues.
