Worse than I thought, oh ballsacks, need to vent

I started a full-on diet last week. Having being in denial about my weight gain for the last two years, I realised last Monday that I am developing a double-chin, which sent me shrieking around the room, but was the final straw I needed.

I weighed myself last week, on scales belonging to someone else, opened a FitnessPal account and registered my weight at 187 lbs, with a goal weight of 168 pounds.

I've been doing really well on the food and exercise front for the last week, coming in slightly under my calorie goals most days, not exceeding on any of them, although it has taken a lot of will power. So I was feeling positive about weighing myself this evening, on my newly bought scales.

Except I must have completely misread the electric scales at my friend's house, or misremembered the reading when i converted it from stone to pounds for Fitness Pal (more likely), because I actually weigh 202 pounds!

Suddenly, my goal feels unachievable. It's going to take a lot longer to get there, which means staying strong for a longer time and while I know I won't feel hungry on my current regime (1400 calories), there doesn't seem to be any room for real treats (2 clementines is not a pudding, sorry, but it isn't).

Going for a bath now and hoping that I'll wake up feeling a bit more positive, but feel like crap at the moment and needed to get that of my chest.

Ah you poor thing. Don't be all hard on yourself mrs Bert, it'll make you eat anyway. Ignore the scales for a while put them out your head. Choose something snug from your wardrobe and make that your goal. Besides the thing with scales is they don't tell you about muscle. So go by your clothes. Your doing great, you got in the zone, your motivated, your on your way. You can do it!! What about little pots of Jelly for desert they are pretty low in calories. Good luck. Weigh yourself in a month. X

Could there be a lag time from your previous eating behaviours being reflected in the scales?

Sometimes people go a bit mad eating 'enjoyed' foods immediately before a diet.

Give it 6-8weeks before you decide your diet is unsuccessful

Xx

No no no it's not unachievable. I was in similar denial this time last year and eventually accepted I was fat and miserable. I weighed in at my first slimming world meeting at 15 stone 11 (221 pounds - gulp) but am now 174 with about 20 pounds to go to my final target. You can do this. Do not delay because it feels too hard - it isn't. One pound a week in a year is 52 pounds. Even half a pound a week is nearly two stone in a year. If you don't get onto this you could gain that in a year v v easily. Don't put it off.

Echoing what chubfuddler said. It is doable. I eventually accepted that I wasn't happy having avoided scales for years and signed up to Fitness Pal weighing 16st and 9 lbsBlush. 8 months later, and with some blips, I have lost about 4 and a 1/2 stone. Please don't be discouraged. You can do it. I've realised that I will go for several weeks barely anything and will suddenly overnight drop half a stone. I tend to hover around a half stone mark for a while and then the same thing happens again. Stick to it. Fitness Pal really works. If I, who have been overweight my whole adult life can do it, anybody canSmile.

Oh how disheartening! I can understand why you are so fed up. My weight has crept up and up over the last few year too and I now need to loose 3 stone (2 1/2 stone would get me to a sustainable but still technically 'overweight' level)

I have a hugely sweet tooth and struggle to find any sensible substitutes for the food I love (fruit is NOT a pudding).

I also get obsessed by the scales and disheartened by no loss, however I do find what Elliepac says (great post btw) about my weight coming off in fits and starts is true so try not to get too hung up on the scales (ha! My dh would laugh his head of if he saw me posting that advice)

I'm trying my fitness pal again, it is a great site (and free of course!) and I'm hopeful I can eventually shift the weight.

Start afresh this morning. Maybe map things out for yourself eg when I reach x weight I'll buy myself a new handbag or whatever things you like. Also, what about a visual reminder of your successes. I used to have a jam jar on the windowsill, I put a marble in each time I lost a pound (or maybe even 1/2 lb!)
Your goal is DEFINITELY achievable.

Hope things seem better this morning Smile

Oh and this is really genuinely delicious and filling and very low calorie, I highly recommend (although as some reviewers have said that recipe is for 2 not 4)

HTH Smile

Good morning,

Thank you for all your kind words of encouragement and advice, they are really appreciated.

Having slept on it, I am still resolved to stop treating my body like a dustbin. I will not use this setback as an excuse to give up!

Thinking of changing my username to FruitIsNotAPudding, mind. Grin Jelly is a good tip, will stock up in Tesco later.

You will feel better and look better EVERY time you lose weight. Its not a sudden thing where you will only lose your double chin and be able to wear nicer clothes when you hit your target so don't despair.
Every 5lbs, 3lbs whatever count.
