Very excited to be planning my wedding after getting engaged just before Christmas. It will be in the South of England somewhere but we are both atheists so it will be a civil ceremony. However I was a bit disappointed to learn that in England, unlike in Scotland where I am from, a humanist celebrant can't do the legal ceremony. I have had very good experiences with humanists for funerals and find them to be much better, warmer speakers than the registrars I have seen at past weddings.

Don't flame me but I also have a slight preference for the ceremony to be conducted by a man rather than a woman but most registrars seem to be women these days. From what I can work out, it seems you have no choice whatsoever in the matter, it's just whoever is the duty registrar at the office local to your venue.

We don't want to have a secret civil ceremony then a blessing type thing-is really important to me to have family and friends witness the actual moment we become legally husband and wife.

Does anyone have any tips or good or bad registrar stories to share? We are at early planning stages and not tied to a specific town. Thanks!

I honestly don't understand why you would rather be married by a man, than a woman. Why ? Confused

I also wanted to be married by a man and have no idea why apart from previous wedding that had been conducted by woman registrars I found their voices really irritating.i think you have an idea in your head of what it would be liked. I also liked the idea of meeting the person before I got to the bottom of the aisle.
I'm in Scotland and had a humanist wedding so am no help, how annoying they aren't considered legal in England. You may just have to come back up to get married Wink

waitmonkey, pretty much exactly for the reasons that yellows gave. Have been to some weddings with awful droney women presiding. Not that tbere is any guarantee that a man won't be droney, but I prefer the timbre of a deeper voice for a ceremony, in the same way that some people prefer one type of music over another.
