alternatives to just going to the registry office for mini wedding

So... DP finally proposed after 6 years and 2 kids!

None of our family lives close to us (different countries) plus i don't really think they would get along. We were thinking of just going to the registry and the have 2 separate dinners later on when we go a visit them.

All well and all but going to the registry without a party after doesn't really appeal to me so, i was thinking of going on a holiday with the DC (4 and 1) and get married there. Kinda eloping but with DC! It would have to be something cheap.

Any ideas?

Scotland is the traditional runaway wedding destination! head just over the border to Gretna green or take advantage of their slightly different laws to pick a more unusual venue.
There are several companies who cater for small/family weddings and you could make it a family holiday too. I think there's one called wee weddings where you hire a cottage and they will marry you on their own land but they are an all inclusive type thing which might be more than you want to pay..but it might give you an idea of what else to look for? Good luck in your search :-)
