What are the slightly more experienced meteorologically knowledgeable MNetters' feelings on this one?

Don't know about being 'meterologically knowledgeable' but I think we could be heading towards a February like we used to have (before the last 2 really cold winters), where we have some short-sharp cold snaps that possibly include a few days worth of heavy snow (and where the whole country then grinds to a halt!)

You mean the GFS model probably which is a computer model run by NOAA. It runs 4 times a day. At the moment it isnt showing snow. If you look at the GFS ensembles which are a collection of results when the model is run several times with slightly different starting conditions, you can see that by the 30th the spread of results is pretty large but with most of the temp predictions being above zero.

So whilst I'm not saying it won't snow then, at the moment GFS isnt showing snow but the models are rather split at the moment, some going for cold and some milder.
