There have been 3 CME's (coronal mass ejections) released from the sun in our direction. and a radio blackout R1 was issued yesterday. Radio 4 this morning painted todays potential as probably more dramatic than they should have but nevertheless worth being aware. Large solar CMEs can cause some problems on earth with electricity supplies and satellite issues. I don't think we need to be concerned at all by the recent events - but it shows the sun is starting to wake up again.

Of course with all these there is a chance of aurora. To see a map of the aurora look here

Another resource to estimate how likely you are to see aurora (cloud permitting)

KP index Typically you would need a Kp of around 6 for Scotland and 8 for southern England.

Of course this coincides with us having a "Siberian Cold Spell" up in the Arctic, so our skies are clear, and we are ready to BE ENTERTAINED!!!!

The main cycle of solar flares are 11 years, we are apparently nearing a top now. Check out the pics here

More (less dramatic/we're all doomed like the Daily Mail was reporting) information here from the BBC. Be interesting to see how far south the Aurora is seen.
