I have a 20 week old and am planning on starting BLW around the end of May ish. Have been reading the Gill Rapley Book but would be great to get some ideas from others and share a few experiences. We will probably start in the next 4-6 weeks. Is there anyone else around starting at the same time that wants to join me on this thread ?

Ooh, me. DS is a few days off 6mo and though he can't quite sit up alone and is still a bit unreliable getting things in his mouth, we'll probably start BLW in the next few weeks so I'll post here if anything interesting happens...

JaneyTroll · 13/04/2010 21:08

Me too! Me too! DS is 6 months old next Sunday and I'm planning to go for the BLW approach. He's pretty wobbly at sitting up but a champ at shoving things in his mouth. I did give him a bit of cucumber in a cafe today and he loved sucking on it. Hope this is a good sign.

He's currently ebf. I can't imagine how I'm going to ease off on that, but I guess it all starts to fall into place. I've been reading the Rapley book too.

I'd love to hear how others get on.

Good luck all!

FluffyFrog · 13/04/2010 21:29

Great to hear that there are some others around willing to share a few stories. I'm off to IKEA to buy an ANTILOP highchair this week as they seem to be well reviewed on here and easily cleanable. Think our dog will come in handy too for cleaning up any food on the floor.
Keep posting with any progress.

Ooh I've just started blw..would love to join in! DD is 6 months on thurs..we just started a week or so ago and she has had all sorts..Mango and kiwi are particular favourites. Is pretty good at getting stuff in her mouth and only a couple of (slightly nervewracking) gagging moments so far!

Smilehighclub · 13/04/2010 23:10

I'll join you. DD was 6 mo Sunday and has been grabbing stuff off my plate for a couple of weeks. It's been very messy I must say. Today she had basmati rice with a little mild cheddar she looked a bit like this > but seemed to like it.

mistressploppy · 14/04/2010 09:26

Smilehigh, do you think dd knew the difference between food and toys when you started?

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 09:31

I'll join in. We started last weekend. DS loving it. It is very messy and sometimes he eats nothing, and sometimes he packs it away! I've had a few moments with big bits of chicken and gagging. I just smiled . He loved his egg on toast this morning though...

I also have the ANTILOP high chair - second hand from my sister and its working well so far .

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 09:31

saying that he has burst into tears a few times while drinking/chewing his tommee tippeee cup - does it hurt him? i can't work it out!

mistressploppy · 14/04/2010 09:34

Is it a free-flow or a non-spill? It's like sucking a watermelon through a hosepipe with the non-spill ones...

FluffyFrog · 14/04/2010 12:28

Is anyone doing cereals for breakfast time ? If so which ones & are the babies managing to get any in their mouths ?

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 13:01

thnks mistress - some comes out freely but he has to suck to get a gobful...

we have thick porridge loaded onto a fork and given to him. has been great before but yesterday moning, he didn't touch it

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 13:02

he likes to smear most ofit around the high chair

mistressploppy · 14/04/2010 15:04

I think ds is just not ready. Just had lunch and put some cucumber chunks and bits of pear on his tray - he tries to grab it, misses, doesn't realise and happily munches on his hand instead

Will wait a bit, I think

popspig · 14/04/2010 16:30

Can I join you too? DD is 23 weeks old and so far I've just given her carrot, cucumber or broccoli to play with - which she holds in her hands rubs around her mouth and then throws on the floor. I think the dog will be getting very fat once she starts properly

FluffyFrog · 14/04/2010 19:32

Welcome to the thread everyone! Its fab to have some others to compare notes with as the only people I know that are weaning are going down the baby rice and jars route.

I am sitting DD on my knee for most meals so she can kind of join in, but she still has a few weeks to go really before we can start seriously. Will have to rethink some of my cooking as I tend to use a lot of stock and salt. I like the idea of kiwis, I ate loads when I was pregnant so perhaps she will remember popspig I think our dog will be getting fat too.

Hi

I've just started too, after a bit of puree to begin with, I have another thread going but just wanted to say that the ANTILOP highchair has been great for us and make sure you get the inflatable insert, keeps your little one nice and steady and up-right, essential for BLW, until they are big enough to fill the chair. I take the insert out with me sometimes too so that I can pad her into other high chairs in cafes ect.

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 19:58

ds loving sweet potato and parsnip fingery chunks roasted. didn't touch the tomee tippee cup tho . and his poos are changing - they smell eewww - so it must be going in .

5ofus · 14/04/2010 19:58

Me too! DS2 is 6 months old on May 14th so we've a month before we start properly. We did BLW with DS1 two years ago but I'm feeling like I need a revision course.

plum71 · 14/04/2010 20:20

And me! dd the exact same age as your ds2, 5ofus. Also did blw with ds (now 3), after very bad start with purees. Won't be wasting our time doing that again..

crikeybadger · 14/04/2010 21:29

Hi,
Just started too! Got the Antilop chair and the brilliant inflatable cushion.
Have so far tried roasted butternut squash, parsnsip and carrot sticks -yum. Lightly cooked pear, apple and plum. Rice cakes and avocado . Porridge pancakes were OK too.

Not sure much has got in him yet and he does seem to get a bit frustrated sometimes. Some things just seem to be too slippy for him to hold.
Def. think that giving a breast feed first works well tho'.

He is underweight at the mo so it will be interesting to see how things are at the next weigh in (especially as HV was a bit on the sceptical side).

But what a mess!! I haven't bothered with a splash mat - we've got a dog and a mop instead.

snugglejunkie · 14/04/2010 21:38

Hello! (Joins in...)
DS is 22wks on Sun, good sitting balance and fab at getting stuff to his mouth. Currently EBF. Past 2wks suddenly really interested in mealtimes, very grabby.

Started giving him a go on whole apple or pear to suck whenever I have one myself (scrape the skin off with my teeth) - he goes mad for it!! whinges when I take it off him to actually eat myself (mmm, babyspit )

Also gave him a roasted sweet potato chunk tonight - smooshed it everywhere (was a bit overdone) but was a delight to watch him suck his fingers. Can't wait to start properly - 4 wks seems so long!!!

RubyBuckleberry · 14/04/2010 21:55

mmm love watching ds suck his fingers too snugglejunkie - he's just realised the goo on them tastes nice lol

snugglejunkie and crikeybadger - how did yours get on with whole fruit and rice cakes then - i am being a chicken thinking its too advanced for ds - he loves avocado on toast but am thinking too much wheat/bread (although he only has a finger or two) so thought about rice cakes - didn't know if they were too crunchy re: choking hazard eeeekkk think i might be fussing!

ruddynorah · 14/04/2010 22:01

ooh me too! ds is 6 months on 20th may, the weekend of his big sister's 4th birthday. so his first taste may well be something from her party!

we have the antilop ready. had a big dreadful thing from m&p with dd, learnt from that!

snugglejunkie · 14/04/2010 22:17

He doesn't actually eat much! I actually skim off a bit of the surface of the fruit with my teeth so there is a smooth area of flesh he can suck at with v little chance that he could gum off a chunk iyswim

There's a pic in my profile of some pear 'eating' action. Have to admit - I'm also petrified about choking! Sounds like your DS is really getting stuck in RubyBuckleberry. How old is he? Is everyone sticking to the 6mths thing or are you going more with sitting balance etc??

supergreenuk · 14/04/2010 22:22

Yes me. My DD is 20 weeks tomorrow. I am still breast feeding and the only thing she has had is banana medicine and calpol. I have also let her suck on apple when ever I have one. I am really not sure how I am going to start it from there really. Can't wait to hear all about everyone elses experiences. xx
