How much milk should he be having during weaning

Hi,

Wondered if anyone could offer any advice. I have recently started weaning my 5 month old baby boy. At a recent visit to the HV she suggested he should only be having 20oz of milk a day. He is currently having approx 42oz. He is a big boy and is on the 98th centile. After giving him his purees I have been subsituting his milk after with water to try to reduce his daily intake. It seems to be going well but I don't want to be reducing his milk too much if he still needs it. I have looked on a number of websites but they all seem to be offering different advice so any thoughts would be greatly received.

Thanks

the minimum is 20oz so it is perfectly ok to take more than this. I wouldnt even think about cutting his milk as he will start to cut down on his milk by himself as his appetite for solids increases. At this age ds had 5 bottles of around 7oz and went down to 4 bottles around 8 months when he gave up his night feed. At this stage weaning is about introducing new tastes and textures not about replacing milk feeds - give the same milk as before and offer solids either with the milk feeds or some time after the milk e.g. my routine was

7am - milk
8am - solids
11am - milk
12pm - solids
3pm - milk
5pm - solids
7.15pm - milk
in the night up to 8 months - milk

I was wondering this the other day. My DD is nearly 7 months and I give her about 28ozs of formula a day plus 3 meals. She sometimes leave a little bit of her milk though. I've been a bit concerned as she hasn't really put much weight on since about 20 weeks.

Thanks for your advice Seona1973. I've noticed already this week he is reducing how much milk he is taking from each bottle.

Thank you.
