Weaning

9mo and very "crackly" when feeding

My DD is 9mo and has been eating solids since 5.5mo. She eats foods with a variety of textures - eg spoon-fed yoghurts, thicker consistencies like curries, and finger foods like crudites, omelettes and croissants. When eating, and for 10 mins or so afterwards she is really "crackly", as if she has a chesty cough. Her chest is clear though, and all is well after a few minutes. The crackliness doesn't vary according to the consistency food.
She eats really well (lots, and quickly!). I'm just a little concerned as I don't know of any other babies who are similar.

Any thoughts/experiences?

I would ask HV about this.
'Crackly' can sometimes (not always) be a sign that someone is aspirating (ie taking food into lungs which is not good).

I'm a salt and although not a specialist in this area (known as 'Dysphagia') i know a fair bit about it.

Not saying you need to worry, but just get the all clear eh?

Off to work myself now.

'Hi, Dont mean to worry you but I would get it checked out, just incase she is aspirating some food into lungs instead of swallowing properly. Very unlikely without other symptoms and the fact it resolves quickly but I would check with your hv, gp or even nhs direct!!!'

Thanks for your advice. I have worked with people with strokes so have a fair idea about aspiration and dysphagia - I had already started to make myself worry! Her weight gain is fine (90+ centile) and her chest seems clear between solid feeds, but the crackling really is awful and quite persistent. Looks like my plan of avoiding the hv is destined to fail .

the hv will just tell you to go to the doctor anyway IME so you can still avoid the HV by going straight to him or her
