Since the last couple of days i have began making my own pureed food for my 6 months ds.And he refuses to eat any pureed vegetables, carrots, brocoli, sweetcorn, etc....But when i giv him a banana he happliy eats that, or baby bisciuts!

Has anyone had a similar experiance, or knows what i should do?

maybe he likes food he can hold (a banana, a biscuit) better than puree - have you tried him with steamed broccoli florets, carrot sticks etc?

so he'll eat solid food but not pureed food? maybe just give more solid food? so instead of cooking carrot and then pureeing it, hand over the cooked carrot. have you tried any other solids other than the banana or the biscuits?

I have tried giving him solid food.Today i gave him brocoli, he would put it in his mouth then spit it out. Also i am scared to give him hard solid food like carrots as he might choke on it?

If i do give him more solid food

  1. would he get full enough
  2. what else can i give him apart form brocoli and carrots?

i used to puree ds's veg and freeze it in cubes, then when i wanted to introduce something new id take 3 of his fav cubes (sweet potato/butternut suash)and add 1 of the other veg (broccoli/cauliflower) lumps and finger food are more than fine for a 6mo.

cook the carrot first . And offer any old veg you can cut into chip-shaped sticks or lumps - whatever you're having for dinner.

If he's only 6mo I'd keep offering a range of foods and not worry too much about how much he eats - he's getting plenty of nourishment from his milk feeds.

i wouldn't give him raw carrot to eat, cook it until you can just about squish it between two fingers. not too soft, not too hard. just like how you would eat it really.

you don't need to stick to carrot and broccoli, try all kinds of things. any fruits, veggies. you can also introduce things like bread, pasta, cheese etc over the next few weeks, assuming there aren't allergies in your family. then you might try fish and meats or pulses a bit later on.

what did you eat today? could he have had some of the same?

I find peeled boiled apple quarters work really well. Just boil until softish. The inside goes mushy and the outside stays hardish for easy gripping!

Also, sticks of courgette or baby courgettes, boile until soft, and then fried.

Biggish slices of peppers, boiled until soft, then fry them if you like.

Also soft pears cut into sections with peel left on for grip

And avacado is always very useful

Carrot panckes are also very yummy and soft, but do contain egg, unless anyone knows an egg free version

If you did want to keep trying with the purees I imagine he just needs to get used to the different flavours - if I give my DS a vegetable he's not had before he pulls a face as though he thinks I'm trying to poison him! But then if you're patient and don't force him he will start to open his mouth for more. Try sweeter veg like swede, sweet potato, etc. If he still doesn't eat it I tend to leave it until the next meal - he'll still get enough to eat from his milk.

The only thing my DS won't eat pureed is brocolli but if you give him a steamed floret he'll happily suck on it for hours!

Why not combine some sweet puree with some savoury and see what he thinks. Ds loved banana and avocado, although it did make him do little pale green possets all over my carpet
Apple and carrot good too

My daughter was just like this. Firstly I'd say relax, it's not forever, and they are still very little.

The suggestions here about finger food are great. I'd also add toast and potato scones which have always gone down very well.

And finally I found she would eat sweet tasting savoury foods (like carrots, peas). Three dishes went down particularly well - carrot and parsnip soup; carrot, lentil and spinach soup; and a vegetable curry made with lentils and coconut milk.

Good luck!

All veg taste nicer roasted IMO! LOL thats how I like it and so does my DD.

If you roast carrot sticks they hold together better too but not too hard for your baby to chew on.

Ash80 - keep trying, keep trying. It can take up to 20 tastes of a food to become accustomed to it or even maybe like it a bit, so don't give up on anything you've already tried, just re-introduce it another time. Only try little amounts of foods that have been previously rejected, and maybe alongside something that is liked. Good luck
