Weaning

Feeling frustrated & upset!

Hello, my dd has recently been ill with gastric flu, whilst she had it she was still having her milk & solids as usual not as much but she was having them. Now although she seems better in herself she does not want any milk ( formula) she did this the last time she was ill. The doctor said it was because she couldnt breath through her nose so constantly got upset as soon as she sees the bottle. I have also tried her on a beaker and a cup to no avail. My auntie (has had two dc's within last 4 years) says i should take her off the milk feeds completely as it keeps upsetting her and give her only solids, but mixing her milk in with these. Can anyone advise me if this is alright? And what foods i can offer her where i could integrate the milk? As i believe milk is still very important until they are one right? (she is coming up to nine months).

Thanks and soz this post is a bit long.

At her age, going without milk for a day or two won't do any harm. You can make sure she's still getting enough calcium etc by giving her yogurt, or making rice pudding, etc etc.

So do you think it is alright to leave out the bottles and integrate the milk into other foods?

(thanks for getting back to me NQC )

I think it would be fine for a few days. How is she with her food? Does she like cheese?

She does like cheese, not too fond on petit filous though!

Sensible child - petits filous are really high in sugar. Much nicer to give some yogurt (greek preferably, higher fat) mixed with some mashed banana.

Oh i never realised. Will not be offering them anymore then. I shall try the greek yoghurt.
But you say i should only keep the bottles away short term? She has been off them since wednesday.

I would offer them, but take them away if she refuses them, and not try to push it.

There are lots of foods which have lots of dairy in them - anything cheesy, yogurt, rice pudding, etc etc.

Haily111 my ds1 refused milk from a bottle altogether and like you I really believe in the importance of milk so I used to spoonfeed him. It's time-consuming and messy to begin with but he soon got the hang of it, did it from around 9/10mths.

DD was never that fussed about milk once she went onto solids. I used to put it in anything I cooked for her and gave her veg in cheese sauce.

Hipp do some baby weetabix that my ds really loves. You mix 1 bisc with about 4oz milk. I got them from sainsburys.

You mean you spoonfed him milk? I tried that as well, but i think she gets the taste of the milk then thinks she cant breath and then gets upset! So i have masked it with dried food (i.e. boxes from farleys heinz etc) Although it says on the box to use water

oh poor thing, well if she really doesn't want it then best to incorporate it into food - cereals, add to mashed potato, give custard, yogurt, cheese. I know lots of children who as babies weren't too keen on milk, they're all perfectly healthy. But definitely do try to make sure she gets calcium from other sources.

brocolli contains calcium too, so brocolli with cheese sauce made with formula is a good boost of calcium.

Thank you, what kind of cheese sauce are we talking about?

Just melt some butter in a saucepan, mix in some flour and gradually beat in the milk. (or formula).

Stir continually until thick and creamy, them add a good wodge of grated cheese.

Don't use the packet ones, they are really salty. If you don't want to make your own, just grated cheese on top should be ok, but cheese sauce is lovely. Tastes good for adults with a bit of salt and pepper.

sardines are very high in calcium too, you could try them on toast.
