Milk and food routine for 6 month old

What kind of routine do people have for their 6 month old? Mine is like this at the moment:

8ish - milk
9am - breakfast
12pm - milk
1pm - lunch
4pm - milk
5.30pm - dinner
8pm - milk
10ish - bedtime milk
1 middle of the night feed

  • all approx. of course

Does this sound right?? He sometimes won't eat much food. Should I maybe rty moving it around a little, or start to cut out the 12pm feed??

i would suggest cutting down the midnight feed, but otherwise that sounds very good indeed

He demands the night time feed - screams for it

Should I maybe be leaving more of a gap between the milk feed and food?? He's only starting fussing a bit over the last couple of days - no problems till now. I'm wondereing if it's just a phase and the appetite will return to normal. Have also introduced dairy and wheat in the last few days.

ah that could be it! is there a milk feed that he doesnt seem interested in? are you breast or bottle?

He's good with all his milk feeds. I'm breast feeding as he's never accepted the bottle. Having said that, on Thursday, in my depseration to get him to drink some water, I took out the bottle again and he's been drinking from it since. So now I've been giving 1 of the daytime feeds from the bottle and I'm thinking of eventually givning the 12pm and 4pm feeds from the bottle. I was aiming to wean him off the breast over the next couple of months anyway, before the teeth come in as he bites so much, so this should help..

my 7 month old goes-

6am milk
7am breakfast
8am nap 1hour
9am milk
11am lunch
12pm nap 1 hour
1pm milk
2pm snack
3pm nap half hour
4pm milk
5pm tea
6pm milk
7pm bed.

so basically milk after each nap. she has bottles now and has about 60 to 80 mls each time, before that it was a quick bf, maybe 5 minutes.

My ds has only just tken to the bottle..

I've also changed things a little - so now:
8ish - milk
9am - breakfast
11.30am - milk
1pm - lunch
3.30pm - milk
5.30pm - dinner
8.30pm - milk
10ish - bedtime milk
and he still wakes once in the night for a feed.

I thought maybe if I leave longer between the milk and a meal he might eat better.

I'm giving the 11.30 and 3.30 feeds from the bottle now and he takes 3-5oz. I thought this might not be enough, but going by how much your dd drinks, that's probably ok??

I'm thinking I might slowly replace all his feeds with the bottle

mine is virtually identical to yours!
I was getting worried that I was feeding too often, so this makes me ffel a lot better!

I've just come back from hv cos ds isn't eating very well at lunch and dinner and she's told me that he's drinking too much milk and that I should cut out the mid-morning and mid-afternoon milk feeds. She says that's also the reason why I can't get him to drink any water - cos he's alwys just too full. i'm really nervous about cutting out both these feeds in one go and I am tempted to cut them out one at a time.

What do you think??

SleepInHeavenlyPeace, do you find your little one doesn't take in too much at a time aswell??

at 6 months you really don't need to worry that he isn't eating much. milk should still be his main food. the solids are just about learning about eating, getting used to tastes and textures. as he gets more interested he will take in less milk or refuse the milk feed altogether.

why is your hv trying to rush him? did she weigh him? how's his weight gain? is he happy generally? are you doing blw?

He's gonna be 7 months next week. His weight gain was fine and he's generally happy, except he's started throwing tantrums recently, although I think this is cos of teething pain..

I'm wondering if I should just move things around a little and just cut out the morning feed for water, say...?:

8ish - milk
9am - breakfast
12.30pm - lunch
3ish - milk
5.30 - dinner
8.30pm - milk
10ish - bedtime milk

What do you think?? Maybe this way he'll eat better and drink sufficient amounts of milk aswell..

i can't really say shish. i mean i can tell you what i do but it's not necessarily what's going to work for your baby. i'm doing baby led weaning so dd controls her own intake. she gets food offered 4 times times a day and she gets milk offered after each of her 3 naps plus when she wakes and when she goes to sleep. she also sometimes wakes at night for milk, once or twice but not always. i really just go with it. she is also offered water with her meals. she sometimes takes in a lot of water, sometimes she only takes a sip. i really just let her decide.
