Weaning

6 mo big baby - starting to wean, is he eating/drinking too much?

I started weaning my 6 month old a few weeks ago and have been doing it slowly. He now has 2 or 3 solids a day but still is on 5 bottles of 210 mls a day. Routine is:-
9am - 210ml milk and sometimes porridge
1.30pm - pureed veg and fruit
2pm - 210ml milk (try to give him a bit less now, leave about 2oz in bottle)
6.30pm - pureed veg/fruit and rice or porridge
7pm - 210ml milk (trying to give less)
8pm - bed
12midnight - 210ml milk
4.30/5am - 200ml milk

Am I giving him too much milk? I have tried to cut down the milk after the solids but he seems to really want it and is very greedy. I would love him to only have one dream feed not two but don't know how to cut this down as he does cry at those times for milk. Should I make the daytime feeds closer together? He is a big baby (91st percentile) so I am worried I am over feeding him - if so, how do I cut it down without distressing him? Please help!

Sounds normal that he still wants the same amount of milk. A bit of pureed vegetable etc is low calorie so not really a substitute for his milk. When he's having a more varied diet, he'll naturally cut back on his milk but that could take a few weeks yet.

mine is 9 months and only just starting to reduce his milk himself. I BF so dont know volumes but he is doing shorter feeds and going longer between them.
literally only happened this week.
I wouldn't worry about reducing milk yet.

we have just started weaning our 5.5 month old. yesterday just a baby rice and a jar for dinner, also had his usual 5 x 8oz milk during the day.
today he had

Woke 6:30
bottle (8oz) 7:00
Pureed pears - 8:30 (whole jar)
bottle (8oz) - 11:00
Bottle at 2pm
1 jar of sweet potato & 1jar of fruit at 4:00
Bottle at 6:30 8oz again

He is now tucked up in bed and will be until the morning,he dropped night feeds at around 3months So he goes from 6-6.
Im worried its too much food, not enough bottles etc But he seems fine and settled.

He was 9lb 2oz when born so I think he may just have a big appetite.

I wouldn't cut the daytime milk at all and would look to start cutting down the middle of the night one instead. You don't want him taking extra in the night because you have cut the milk during the day

I would also maybe give the milk before the solids rather than before as milk is still most important. Are you offering water with the food too

The milk is still very important at this age, so don't be cutting back on that. I always made sure I gave DD milk before each meal so that she always had space for the milk and then she could eat as much food as she liked after that. It sounds like you are doing well, DD was also a big baby and liked her food right from the start Smile

Think I had posted the same thing few months ago!!!
Ds ate a huge amount of solids at that age and still bf loads. He is now one and still eats massive amount and guzzles cups of whole milk. Tbh I try encourage it as he sleeps great at night if he is filled in the day!!

Thanks everyone. He is doing well but his routine is changing at night - he was being fed at midnight and then 5am but now it's often 11pm that he wakes crying and then 3 or 4am. I would like him to drop that 3/4am bottle but I don't know where to start! Do I just not give it to him? He'll go bananas!
