Sippy Cup recommendations?

Proudmummy2014 · 03/10/2014 22:12

Hi there,

My DD is 5 months and I'm just preparing for everything that I will need when I start weaning her. This is all new to me, so if anyone could please advice me on the following it would be appreciated :-)

  1. what are the best sippy cups to use

  2. when would I actually use the sippy cup? Would it be for water or for all milk feeds too?

    Thank you :-)

While on the topic of weaning- it would also be useful to know what are the essentials that I need? There are so many different bowls and plates (divided sections etc), and it's all so confusing.

The tommee tippee first cup with the handles. It's the one everyone I know uses. It's free flow as recommended to teach them how to drink from a cup eventually.
I'd use it for water at first. Just offer a bit at meals. I bf but stopped at 13m and move to cows milk in a sippy cup. I think if you are ff you are supposed to ditch the bottles by one but I don't know anyone who has done this.

You'll need bibs. I'd recommend ones with arms. Simple plastic bowls - you won't actually be able to put it anywhere near the baby until they are old enough to understand not to throw it. Spoons? I found flatter ones worked better than very shaped ones.

Thanks so much for responding to this. So would my DD drink water from it throughout the day or only at meal times?! I'm FF so would I keep feeding her milk in her usual bottle throughout the day?

In terms of the spoons- would the silicon tipped ones be best?

We FF DD and she was completely free of bottles by 12 months (which I think might be the guidance). We used the free flow tommy tippee sippy cups as again the guidance recommends free flow. But they do spill more than ones with valves. Most of my friends used ones with valves and their DC seem fine, so I don't know why there is a difference. The valve ones take more disassembling and washing.

I don't know if there is a reason to keep using bottles for milk. We did, but I guess it was partly habit. Perhaps a sippy cup is too fast flow to begin with.

I think weaning is the point when you can relax a bit, so apart from avoiding chocking hazards (whole grapes, cherry tomatoes, rounds of sausage, marshmallows, chewy sweets) you can experiment a bit.

Another free flow TT user here - they are in Poundland!

I used basic poundland plastic spoons too (although we mainly finger fooded it, she had yoghurt and porridge on pre loaded spoons).

Oh sorry, milk in bottles til 12m, water in sippy cups. Past one, milk and water in sippy cups.

Hi, my 9 month Dd has her milk (ff) in her bottles & then cooled boiled water in the Tommy Tippee cup with her lunch & supper. I don't actually offer her any water throughout the day but I guess if I did then it would be from the sippee cup (I don't offer her water as I thought it might "fill her up" & then she wouldn't want her milk / food).
Re spoons, yes start with the silicon ones as you want ones that can bend and are soft in their mouths.
I can't think of anything specific that I bought aside from a bib, sippee cup & spoons. I didn't bother with plastic bowls as I feed Dd myself (I don't do mess very well).
IKEA do plastic cups, plates & bowls specifically for children that we'll progress to once she's a bit bigger, but personally I didn't see the need to buy all that branded stuff.

from 6 months you don't need to boil the water for drinking as tap water is fine. I also used the tommee tippee first cup

Yup probably right re the not needing to boil - I just read lots of conflicting info & seeing as I stick the kettle on for my coffee in the morning, am still in the habit of then pouring it into the sippee (sippy?) cup Smile

I've got a TT sippy cup for water (they're cheap, handy because they will get lost). I like the TT weaning spoons too. We just use any plastic bowl, or usually the tray of the highchair - nothing special.

I also have a nuk soft spout cup for milk. We bought it for bottle-refusing baby to have from fie months when I went back to work, and he still has it for milk. I use that mainly so that he has something slightly more comforting for milk time, but really early, I bet it wouldn't matter now (11m). It's a good cup though.

I offered water with meals first, and didn't expect much at all. We also have some success with a doidy cup. By 9/10m, he was drinking water more reliably and was taking some in between meals.

Thanks everyone- will def look in to the TT free flow as this seems to be recommended quite often :-)

I was looking online at all the different weaning bowls with suction bottom parts and plates and divided plates for correct portion sizes and was getting all confused

Another vote for the Tommee Tippee ones - only cost about £1 each too so easy to have lots. We wash ours in the dishwasher - make sure the valve is open and it cleans well.

We just got cheap Tesco or Ikea plastic plates and bowls. No need for anything fancy.

Bottom one. Some have a flip up spout like that one, some have a permanent spout.

bronya · 04/10/2014 20:55

Bottom one - like this:
direct.asda.com/tommee-tippee-essential-basics-First-Cup-4m-190ml-Blue/002688611,default,pd.html?dual=0

Available everywhere - Boots, Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys etc

The flip up spout is handy as it won't spill at all when closed. Start with just water, so when they spill it you don't mind too much!

Did you LO's then use this sippy cup until they were 1 year old? Or did they move on to using any other ones? This looks like the sprout is hard- did that bother your LO's at all?

Tommee tippee - basic one with two handles.

In your links, it's the bottom one. So simple yet amazing cup

The hard spout was fine. We've had load of different cups over the years and have always gone back to this basic one.

You use that basic sippy cup for years. It's messy at first but you often have to do a full outfit change after every meal for the first few months so that's not a problem.

We've used ikea plates and bowls and boots own spoons. The sticky bowls are really dear and don't stick very well. Nothing will stop a child who wants to move the plate and tip the food on the floor.

The ikea Antilop high chair tray is fine for food.

DD is nearly three and still uses these. She also has an open cup at the table and the sippy one is for.morning and evening milk (on the couch)

So after the age of 1 your LO's were drinking milk out of these too?
