Tips for getting 17month old to drink milk out of a cup and fitting it into the bedtime routine

My ds is almost 17 months old and still has his milk from a bottle until a few days ago. He was ebf for 7 months and then mainly bf until 13.5 mo but had bottles twice a day the three days a week I was in work from when he was 7mo. I was going to swap to a cup at the childminders when he was 12mo but she said it wasn't a big deal as he was still little and stupidly I went along with it! When I stopped bf him at 13.5mo he started to have his bedtime milk in a bottle. We have continued like this since.

I want to move him on to a cup now though mainly because I am worried about his teeth. He normally has a bath, brushes his teeth and has his bottle in the rocking chair before going into his cot. However I have since read (silly of me for not knowing) that only water is safe for teeth at night so I want to give him milk in a cup before brushing his teeth. Also, with the cup, he won't just lie on ny knee and drink the whole lot like he did with his bottle, he keeps throwing the cup away and getting down. When I offer him the cup he either pushes it away or takes a momentary sip.

The whole cup thing is really confusing his routine and I don't know how to fit it in. Do I give milk downstairs before his bath and teeth to give him longer to drink it? The problem is though, if he is distracted by running round, playing etc I don't think he will drink it. I have tried having quiet time in his room to read books and drink his milk but he just keeps refusing to drink the milk and using it as an opportunity to mess around.

Any help on how to make the transition would be greatly appreciated!

I gave mine the milk in an open cup while they were in the bath. That way I could brush thei teeth after and not worry about any spills Smile
