How long does BLW take?

DD was 6mo on Monday. Been BLW for 1 week. She seems to be enjoying it so far; tries everything I put in front of her. But she just sucks it and if any big lumps break off she spits them out. I know this is normal and I don't want to rush her, but how long did your LO take to "get" the swallowing thing and actually get some sustenance from food?
I'm back to work at the end of June and am a bit worried about how much she'll be eating. She's EBF and has just started taking some milk from a sippy cup as she steadfastly refuses a bottle.

It can vary so much, depending on the baby. It sounds though like your dd is off to a good start.

My ds took a few weeks to really get to grips with eating properly, and then a while longer to improve his fine motor skills enough to handle most food confidently. You will probably see in your dd's nappies that she is actually eating more then it seems.

I would imagine that in a months time your dd's self feeding will be a lot better than it is now, and that you will be a lot happier about leaving her in childcare.

DS didn't eat very much at all for the first month (except for yogurt which is still a favourite!). Around 7 months, he seemed to figure out what to do and had a decent go at eating most things, although not in great quantities. Around 9 months, the quantity stepped up - I found I needed to consciously cook extra for him rather than just giving a few pieces from my plate .

Watching with interest. I was wondering the same thing.

Totally depends on the baby. DS1 wasn't really eating a lot until he was about 11 months (he was into tasting it all, but never really put much away for ages). DS2 was tucking into big plates of veggie lasagne at 7/8 months, really into his solids, loves grabbing big handfulls and shoving them in his face (he's had solid poohs since 7.5 months) - totally different to DS1.

1 week in is really really early to know how quickly your baby will take to it or not, you'll know better after maybe a month or two.

She'll still need a fair bit of milk when you go back to work (will she be about 8 months?) though, but 2 months is plenty of time for her to manage drinking from a sippy cup (or doidy)

Thanks for the feedback. She seems to like to taste everything, but sucks the life out of things that dissolve easily like the carrot puffs. She loves the banana muffins I made! Grin. DS was down to four milk feeds when I went back to work at 9.5mo. I know she'll be that bit younger, but I'm so worried she'll be crying from hunger! DS was purée fed so this is all very new (DD refuses a spoon, unless it has yoghurt on it, hence the BLW). I suppose it's like all things with babies; I'll just have to see how it goes! Smile

My ds is 5 months old and I plan to do BLW. I got a good book and it says even if they just suck the food they're still getting some nutrition from it. I know I too will find it quite difficult not to rush things. Good luck!x
