Weaning

8 month old constantly vomiting food and milk

We were doing so well with weaning :--(( And now it all has gone pearshaped.

We started at 5 1/2 months on fruit purees and vegetable purees. At six months, we mixed in meat purees and finger foods, and DS loved it. Never really rejected anything we offered him.

Thins went really well until about a month ago. We moved on to slightly lumpier textures - again, no problem. At one family dinner, we pureed a beef roast, which left quite big junks of (very tender) beef. It took him a while, but he managed to chew those down as well and didn't seem to be distressed by the experience.

However, for a few weeks now, he constantly vomits food and / milk. These are the situations in which he vomits:

  • Milk only during or immediately after a milk feed. His the one I am not so worried about - he has always been a bit prone to the really spectacular milk losses. I think he is going too quickly and then just gets rid of the overflow. Never been diagnosed with reflux or anything, but I was never worried about reflux as he has always gained weight well and has never been distressed or anything. My sofa has suffered more.

  • Solids - during a feed. He gags, which I guess is quite normal at this stage, but he even gags on yoghurt. Plus, as I said earlier, he gags on things he has coped well with before (or on things that I've made extra-smooth for him)

  • Solids with milk - often, he gags so badly that half the last milk feed comes up with the solids.

  • In the last couple of days, he has even gagged whilst not eating and

brought up milk / solids... like when I carried him down the stairs... and that was at least an hour after his last feed!

He also brings up food and / or milk just by caughing. His latest cold started when things with food got really bad and still hasn't cleared. I suspect that his whole ear / nose / throat system is so clogged up that he just can't swallop properly. He even seemed to have problems swallowing his porridge during the last couple of days.

Is this a likely explanation? Have you experienced something similar?
BTW, he is now on antibiotics for a ear infection. Maybe this will help clear the system out... finally!

Tell me this is getting better, as this morning he caughed out breakfast in the car, onto his new car seat... on my 2nd day back at work...

My DS (12m) is also very "gaggy", always has been, but it definitely gets much, MUCH worse when he's got a cold/cough. We have had some spectacular vomits on plenty of occasions. I don't know what to suggest really, I certainly haven't had any luck stopping it from happening with my DS, in fact he's still not very good at eating lumpy food at all (even without a cold). I did mention it to the HV and she wasn't concerned at all, she said some babies just take longer to lose their gag reflex and deal with lumps well.

Hi, I can honestly say that I would go back to the gp - my daughter had similar symptoms to this and at around 8 months she finally got to the point she couldn't even take a spoon of purée and milk feeds were painfully slow. It transpired that she had a very uncommon oesophageal stricture. I know my daughter is very much the minority not majority but I would go back. Good luck

Thanks both!

I will wait until this cold passes and see whether things improve. If not, we are definitely back at the GP!

It's just odd that he didn't have a problem initially!
