I despair....

Just a rant really... I just don't get this ever increasing trend of reducing period houses to soulless boxes. Do people really want/like this look? I see it time and time again and just can't fathom it out

I don't like it, but taste is so very individual I think the trend is actually to make it free of any personal effects and it taste/ personal style. It's a blank canvas for the buyer to personalise. But I entirely see where you're coming from, I prefer a bit of character and rooms that don't for furniture properly too Wink

Yes I agree.

Around here where I live in west london so many houses are starting to look like this - they are all painted in grey, with stark modern kitchens and box like kitchens leading onto box like gardens. I guess I'm just not fashionable ;-)

I was talking about this just last week but with regards to all the Wimpy style new builds. Tiny and with no distinctive period features. They're identikit and being thrown up around my way.

I also hated when I bought my Victorian flat that most of the features had been ripped out.

It's not very in keeping with the style of the house, is it? I'm surprised that staircase survived, and wasn't replaced by floating glass steps with no banister Grin

Structurally though I don't think anything significant has been done, so it wouldn't be hard to put some character back in (er, if I had 1.75 million quid + change obviously) - I do like a modern kitchen with lots of light but it seems to have been achieved by completely sacrificing the garden. I'm surprised that was allowed - I can't build out on to my garden.

That's a very extreme example, isn't it? Being used to period houses I can see the appeal of buying one where all the wiring/plumbing/plastering has been done for you but that's just been massacred. What a shame.

As far as I can see, the original features have been retained/restored - there's still ceiling roses, sash windows, staircase etc. the kitchen is a modern extension. It's just been nicely plastered and painted white. Plastering, rewiring, etc are horrible boring and dirty, especially when you are doing them on evenings/weekends on top of your day job.
I'd live that house. As pregnantpause says, it's a blank canvas - you inject the character when you move in. The garden's not ideal but there is still a lot you could do with it. Smile
