meccano fine I would think - esp some of the smaller kits - they tend to be make a certain thing rather than build whatever you like these days I think

what about harder lego? plenty of the ranges seem to start at about 7 or 8, that might interest him? My DS is 10 and spends hours building power miners lego

if he likes gluing stuff maybe a very simple airfix, especially if some time with a parent/grandparent to help is thrown in?

something else DS likes is the make a 3D castle out of card kits - cut out the bits and stick them together - often can get them at stately homes. - again is history and glue!

Meccano has got lots of stuff now, from toddler stage to complicated looking robots. K'Nex is pretty good too, they have a few Bamzooki-style robot things.

Not a building toy, but I think this is a pretty cool toy for a boy. Or maybe I just want one myself.

I like Knex - it's much less fiddly than Meccano.

Knex is good fun too - can you tell my DS is really into construction?!

We have that K'Nex Moto Bots thing you linked to. LOTS of huffing and puffing from DP when he was putting it together over Xmas. But it has stayed in (mostly) one piece and DS still likes playing with it. It moves across the room in a minor league menacing way.
