schooling whip length

My riding school suggested using a schooling whip instead of a short crop. I have just bought a 33 inch one as I'm only 5 2, so probably riding ponies and smaller horses. Plus I'm new to using it so I didn't want one too long until I get used to managing it. However, now I'm home, I'm wondering if it's too short? Any suggestions? :) thanks.

That sounds short. DD rides her ponies (from Welsh B to 133 SHP) with a variety of schooling whips but they are all 40 inches long with another 4 inches after the bend or of tassle. This would be a popular length so she can tap them correctly without taking her hands off the reins.

The one we have for horses is 42 inches long plus tassle.

What did your tack shop advise?

They suggested 36 inch but I chose to go with shorter 33. I think it may be too short to tap without taking reins off. I may have to return it.

Yes go with their suggestion. I've just measured the one that DD had when she was little and that was 30 inches plus tassle. You should be able to tap them lightly on the hind quarters with a flick of your wrist.
