Positives and negatives of academies

In the news today, a bill has been announced whereby all failing schools will be converted to academies.
I work in a high school in Special Measures. We are on our third visit (due imminently) but might not come out. We've managed, thanks in part to the archdiocese, to avoid academisation so far.
Is it such a bad thing? Those of you in recent converter schools, what have been the main differences you've noticed?

No more STPC document. You know, that document that protects teachers from unfair requests from heads who don't care about work/ life balance.

Other than that, HOW can an academy change the school??
