Just that really, I have an observation in a couple of weeks and am after ideas. Kids are working at phase 1 & 2. Am kind of ok with phase 2 but struggle with phase 1. HT likes a bit of awe in there. Help!!

Are you in reception? What are your children interested in? Do they enjoy music for example? An outstanding lesson needs to be suited to the individuals you have in your class- so without more information it is a bit hard to help! :)

Hi, they're nursery so 3 and 4. We're doing a couple of weeks on Africa so was thinking something African animal-ish. Instruments always go down well! Fine with phase 2 stuff, just struggle with phase 1. Abilities range from no awareness of different sounds whatsoever to knowing all phase 2 phonemes.

I find that the my best lessons are always the ones that are rooted in familiarity. The children then know what is expected from the activity, you don't waste valuable time explaining what to do, you know it's going to work. Then you add the awe/ wow/ interest by changing something. So, in your case, maybe a familiar phase 1 activity, like copying sound patterns, but using fun African instruments.

have you got a copy of the letter and sounds guidance
there are loads of ideas for activities in there for phase 1
phase 1 is.about identifying sounds as opposed to phonic sounds
its about listening and attention
so everything that children.do.before they start to hear letter sounds
so music
singing
nursery rhymes
those sound games on cds

if you did initial sounds it would be easy to cater for both phases.
Go on an animal safari. Who'd like to try spotting the t... t... give binoculars to child who wants to try finding the small world animal. Phase 2 match with grapheme
