The litter tray

My cat keeps being sick

We adopted two cats from the Cats Protection in July. They were spayed and vaccinated there. We went away last week so put them in a cattery from Monday to Saturday. We found the cattery's details on a card in our vets and it was also recommended by a friend of a friend.

Both of them have been off their food since we picked them up on Saturday morning. The cattery owner said that one of them had been sick but that they had been good during their stay. We thought maybe she had overfed them by leaving food down all day and feeding them too many Dreamies. We left a large bag for them (since they have a few a day) but it wasn't returned to us so we thought maybe they'd eaten them all. Also, we normally weigh out their food and feed them twice a day rather than leaving it out all day. They always eat it there and then.

Nell ate half a tin of tuna on Saturday but it went straight through her - she didn't even make the litter tray. Tess turned her nose up at it. Since then Tess has barely eaten a thing and has been sick about eight times - it is a clear spit-like fluid, sometimes a bit brown (but her biscuits are brown), and only a little bit. She wasn't sick for about 24 hours so I thought she was on the mend (we would have taken her to the vets today had she been sick again but she seemed OK today apart from not eating) but I'm now worried as she's been sick again and still isn't eating.

I thought she might have just been unsettled (in hindsight I wish we hadn't put them in the cattery) and have a hairball but now I'm wondering if she needs to see a vet. Nell has also been sick twice (once clear overnight and once a sludge of her cat biscuits this morning). Nell has eaten about half a pouch of wet food this evening and seems OK in herself so I'm not as concerned about her although it is not like her, or Tess, to not eat. Nell had biscuits this morning but was sick afterwards. Neither ate much yesterday or Saturday but we left dry food down just in case and tried them on Applaws, which they'd had once before and really liked (no joy this time).

Are they just traumatised or do they have a bug from the cattery? I bought a Feliway plug in for them yesterday just in case it was stress and anxiety. I'm not sure if it is working yet though.

They went out in the garden a bit today (I thought Tess needed to eat some grass) but Tess just sat under a bush the whole time. She doesn't tend to leave the garden though and I'm not sure what she usually does.

Any advice would be appreciated. These are our first cats and we haven't had them long so I don't know what to expect. Are they ill or emotionally upset?

Possibly anxiety. I'd ring the vets for advice anyway, it's always best to err on the side of caution.

My cats went through a phase where over a week or 10 days one or both were sick everyday. I took the to the vets and she gave them a shot of something but said it was probably a bug or they had eaten something that disagreed with them and it passed.however they were still eating so I would agree and ring the vets.

Thanks, Fluffy. She is a quiet girl at the best of times. Should have found a cat sitter for them in hindsight.

Mine took his first stay badly but he's much better now.

Best to call your vet. It could be stress, overfeeding or a bug but I'd get it checked out.

I'd do the vet today if they're not any better, because it's both of them, even though one is worse - if it was just one I'd think maybe stress but both sounds like something's going on - as someone else said it's likely just that they ate something funny or picked up a cattery bug, but that does sound like quite a lot of sick and quite a long time not eating.
