Cat not Eating

He is a 12 year old Tom Cat. Loves food in a big way reflected in his waist line!
You put the bowl down in front of him and its normally seriously head down don't stop until bowl is empty. He is also not at all picky with food he will literally eat whatever is put in front of him.
Last two days he still miaows that he is hungry but then just has a couple of mouthfuls and walks off. He will come back to the bowl and eat a bit, then go away come back and eat a bit more (this is his soft food, Felix)
He will not touch Go-Cat at all which normally he is greedy for and we just give him a tiny bit as a treat but he won't touch it now
He had a lot of teeth out last year so first thought is mouth? But had a look in the depths and can't see anything obviously wrong.
In himself he is quite lively, wants to go out, chases his tail etc and looks well. Slight concern - he is drinking a little more water - not madly so but still. And I've noticed he's grooming himself more than normal - he's a bit of a slob usually.
I think at his age any behaviourial changes do need investigating so may take him to the vet but anyone any ideas?

Hi career. The grooming, and drinking water point to possible thyroid issues. Also constantly miaowing for food.

The vet can do a blood test for this and could just mean a daily tablet if positive.

ooh that's helpful. Thanks... I do feel there is "something" going on that wants looking at just wasn't sure what I was dealing with

The over grooming can make them look a bit scabby. Sad I think you do know when it needs checking out, they are creatures of habit and when that changes it is a worry.

yes thats it exactly you just "know" when they're not quite right.

Hope he's ok and the vet gets to the bottom of it. I'm sure all will be fine.

I would take him to the vet asap. Especially for an overweight cat suddenly not eating/very little eating can be quite dangerous. In a worse case scenario you may need to force feed him special diluted food (from the vet) with a syringe. It is quite urgent as he can end up with liver failure.
