keeps shitting outside my girls bedroom door in the night or early morning. she is nearly 9 months old, not had her first season yet (as far as i know) and is unspayed. (being done after christmas) litter tray is clean, but downstairs and has been in same place for ages. she uses it for most of the day, its almost like she cant be bothered to go down two flights of stairs to use it so shits half way down.

Is this a new thing she's started doing?

Could you lock her downstairs at night? If not, put a litter tray outside your daughter's door, or somewhere else upstairs (if she is being lazy).

We had the same thing in our bedroom when we first had the kittens, but they'd definitely learnt by 9 months.

Options. 1 lock cat with tray in an easy to clean room like the kitchen. 2 leave a tray where she usually poos. Not a great plan as it reinforces her behaviour and might make it harder to stop.

ok, have no kitchen door so cant lock her in there, also, dont trust her not to bug the dog. cant just lock her downstairs as christmas tree is in living room and she likes it rather too much. have so far managed to stop her killing it. could put a tray outside the girls door, but they would probably stand in it or knock it over. its been the last few weeks, i thought it was her protesting at not being able to go outside, but it seems to be a habit now. i did try kicking her outside when she did it, but then thought that it was just giving her what she wanted so might encourage her to do it more. annoying thing is that she has never been let outside early in the morning (we are talking 7am or before that she is doing this) so i dont know why she does it so early. also annoyed because her standard reaction to not being allowed to do what she wants is to make a puddle on the floor (sometime i like to have a coffee on my own in the morning, so dont let her into living room straight away and she pees outside living room door) aaarrrggghhh!!!!! worse than bloody kids.

You need the special cleaning stuff to get rid of the smell properly - something with enzymes in designed to break the proteins down. This worked when one of mine had an accident on the laundry basket and then kept doing it in the same place because she could smell that she'd done it before. Worth a try for starters anyway. Have a look here.

yes i have some of that and its doesnt make any difference. my friend told me to put pepper where she had done it as they sniff beforehand and she wont like it.

That is pretty much the extent of my cat shitting problem solving abilities. Maybe someone else will have a clue...

my cat does this sometimes (if his tray isnt as fresh as he would like immaculate although he tends to do it in the bath. Again its always first thing in the morning. I had to leave a little water in the bath to stop him. He then started doing it outside his tray. Hes just being really fussy and no idea why (it doesnt happen all the time).
