Tips re nervous rescue staffie

Hello all

DP and I are hoping to "foster" a staffie (i.e. give her a temporary home instead of kennels while she finds her forever home), probably picking her up early next week. We've had a dog before so not total newbies but never a staffie. Previous dog was a rescue lurcher who was very chilled and no trouble at all (unless she saw a cat or decided to go hunting in the bushes and became selectively deaf).

Prospective dog is a 2 year old staffie. No major behavioural issues highlighted by the rescue but they say she is finding life in kennels very stressful and unsettling and so is quite nervous.

The rescue staff are being supportive and giving advice of course but it would be great to hear from some staffie owners here, particularly those with rescue dogs. Thanks!

I think it's impossible to tell what she'll be like in the home, because they often display different behaviours in kennels. She may well not be (as) nervous when you get her home. The only advice I could give would be to give her a good routine and stick to it; that will help with any nervousness and provide some security for her until she's settled.

Staffies are very, very affectionate so be prepared for the fact she may well stick to you like Velcro. Give her plenty of space to settle on her own terms, but try not to shut doors if you go out of the room as she may want to follow you around for reassurance. Make sure there's a dedicated space eg a crate or bed where she can retreat to. Try and be very quiet and relaxed for the first day or so - talk to her a lot, and fuss her if she comes to you but don't approach her too much or too forcefully until she's warmed up to you. Be prepared with a Staffie.

They think your lap is their bed

They gave to be able to touch you at all times

You will get licked to death at the door

Will nag to get in your lap when your busy

Have the most guilt inducing eyes

Will get into a huff if can't touch you
