The doghouse

My heart hurts

Last night we stopped off at the local park with our 3 dcs after walking my parents home so we could let the dogs have a quick run. Out of the blue, our 7 year old lab Buddy ran up the steps, out of the gate and into the road where he was hit by a speeding taxi. He was still alive when I got to him but was bleeding lots and didn't make a sound. Somebody brought a blanket and two lovely young lads scooped him up and drove us to the emergency vets leaving their friend behind who ran back into the park to tell my husband what had happened.

When we got to the vets another man helped me get him out of the car and ran him inside but there was nothing the vets could do.

My heart is hurting and very soon dc3 is going to wake up. She is going to be heartbroken. I haven't slept at all and I keep just hearing the bang as he was hit in my head and seeing him lying there. Our other dog is wandering around the house looking lost, she has never been without him.

Sorry there is no point to this post, just needed to say it all and my husband has finally got to sleep.

What a horrible shock for you...I don't really have any advice about telling your poor dc. What a beautiful dog though, I'm so sorry for your loss

I am so sorry, I know how you must feel, it is awful.
Best to keep it short and factual for your DC. That he ran in front of a car and although the vet did their best he was too badly injured.
I hope that in time this terrible memory will fade a little and leave you with the happier ones from his time with you x

I'm so sorry for your loss op. You must be in complete shock. Please look after yourself as you have been through a trauma and will likely feel very shocked and traumatised.

I would leave out the details with your kids, they don't need to know how awful it really was. Your poor boy. So sorry op.

So sorry for you, Anchovies.
It sounds like the accident was so severe that Buddy would not have known anything and that it would have been over quickly for the poor lad.
He looked a beautiful dog.

Good god, I'm so sorry, that's so awful. You have my utmost sympathy. You don't say how old your kids are but I would just be brief and to the point, they are more resilient than you think. If you're able to bring him home to bury him, or collect his ashes, they can say goodbye then. Gives it closure, helps them to understand that he's gone.

I'm so sorry. Flowers

The dcs are all mostly OK which is a relief. I was very matter of fact and havent told them (or my husband) how awful it was. I never imagined I could feel this bad though. Thankyou for pointing out that it's probably shock too that makes sense.

I have got an interview at 9am tomorrow so need to be fixed by then Sad

There are some amazing people around though. Imagine spending your Saturday night running red lights to get a complete strangers dog to the vet. Or running out of your house with a pile of soft blankets to wrap him up in. Or getting your top soaked in a strangers dogs blood to get him into the vet quickly. Or the man who sat with me for almost an hour until my mum or sister arrived and was on his hands and knees wiping up the blood off the floor while I was washing my hands so I didn't have to see it again. Lovely, lovely people.

Sending you unmumsnetty hugs Anchovies. I was in a similar position 18 months ago or so. MN was so supportive and I drew great strength from it.

In my case it was my parents puppy who was out with DH and our dog. Her collar sheared away from her lead and she ran straight into the path of a car. DH scooped her up, ran home with her and a neighbour drove me and her to the vet where I was told she was already gone. It was an awful time, especially for DH. We then had to decide whether to tell my parents who were on holiday at the time.

Anyway, the DCs (then 2 and 4) dealt with it far better that I ever thought and as a family we managed to move to treasuring her memory far sooner than I would have believed possible.

Pour all your love into other Ddog and take comfort from the wonderful life you gave your gorgeous boy Flowers

Take good care of yourself, cry when you need to and be gentle with yourself. You've had a horrible shock and a loss, it will take time.
