gunky eyes - vet needed?

We took kissespup for her first beach trip last weekend and on Monday one eye was producing green gunk. I cleaned it and swilled it with water every day. By today her eye is no longer red and no extra gunk, normal eye bogies normal colour. Based on my experience of sand in eyes in humans I didn't see the need for the vet but would have gone if pup was otherwise under the weather or if eye hadn't improved by now. Just wanted to ask if I made the right assumption

We went at first sign of conjunctivitis. Was a waste of money, it cleared up on it's own within 24 hours and we couldn't even get the drops into his eyes as he wouldn't stay still. So I think you're right to leave it if it's cleared up on its own :)

I bought eye drops from chemist and used them for an inflamed eye. I had to lie and say they were for a person though as one chemist wouldn't give for a dog. Vet wanted to see her so would have been charged a lot more.

I do that for my cat. Just cleaned daily with cool boiled water like you would for a baby. Cleared in a few days c

Cooled boiled water. Breast milk works for gunky eyed babies, not sure about dogs though.

Our vet prescribes human eye drops for dog conjunctivitis so it is safe to just buy your own. Your dog sounds fine now though.

Great, was a little worried there might be some bizarre dog illness I didn't know about

Gunky eyes can also mean ulceration, or KCS ("dry eye" - horrible, painful and fairly common condition), both of which need treatment. That's why vets ask to see dogs with gunky eyes.

Ok I'm gonna share with u the biggest money saver ever in relation to this! I'm kinda excited to share it! You rub apple cider vinegar into the scruff of the neck of the dog three times a day as well as gently washing the eye out with mild salt in warm water and it clears up like magic! Google it! It changed my life when we discovered it as my retreiver used to get it all the time and it cost us a fortune

How much to add to the scruff of the neck? Have heard that a teaspoon in their water can help too with all kinds of ailments, including bladder stones and their prevention, which our little jack x Chinese crested had.

Well we went to see our lovely vet today, as both eyes had green gunk, she was very thorough, better than the doctors when you take the children with gooey eyes. As well as antibiotics for the now infected eyes, she also checked pups coat and suggested a tbsp of olive oil on her food once a days to help the dandruff

Try colloidal silver spray. It worked when my dog had mild conjunctivitis.
