Anyone else feed Canagan?

I have just switched over from Eukanuba puppy because I'd been advised that it wasn't great quality food and had a fairly low meat content. The reviews for Canagan looked good, a friend had highly recommended it - and although she wolfs her food now in a way that she didn't before she seems to be constantly hungry. She is wormed so I'm sure it's not that - but she is a retriever so possibly more food motivated than most. I'm feeding a bit more than the recommended amount because otherwise she's just barking and beside herself about an hour before feeding....she's getting training treats too. Is it just because there is less grain/maize than she's used to in the Eukanuba?

Yes, and I found the same with my late westie. He went from picking at food to wolfing down the lot with canagan. He loved it and tolerated it very well (he had typical westie skin issues)

When we had our scottie last year we immediately changed him over to Canagan. He's not especially food motivated so doesn't wolf it down like Bob did but he does love it. We flit between flavours with him and usually have a few bags on the go, he had Salmon last night and will probably have Chicken tonight.

It's good stuff, it scores very well indeed on the dog food guide as well.

She obviously enjoys it - but she's so hungry between meals - but perhaps that's just because of her breed? She goes totally bonkers about an hour before her feeds....will she settle down do you think?!

TBH a food motivated dog will always appear ravenous. My Mum has a Shih Tzu (also fed Canagan) who'd eat the whole bag if she let him, he can down a dishful in under a minute. He goes nuts at the sight of a gravy bone.
Be wary of feeling sorry for her an over feeding because 'she seems hungry', Mum fell into that trap and we've spent 6 months slimming down a rather portly little dog.

Mine by contrast will gently pick at his dish over the course of about an hour, but food in general doesn't excite him. If it was a toy he'd be going bonkers for it though.

I used to feed Canagan, but had to switch to something a bit cheaper. Mine loved it too, in fact I ended up buying a Green Feeder to slow the younger dog down at mealtimes.

What you're probably finding is that she isn't feeling as full because, being nutritionally dense, it's not full of all the fillers and other rubbish that Eukanuba has in it. It will settle down as she gets used to it.

It might help to split the food into more feeds per day while you're switching her over, so she's not having to go as long between meals. Then you can gradually reduce the size of the extra meal/s once she's settled onto the food nicely.

Thanks Moolemama; makes sense. She is still on four feeds a day so I don't think I could give her too many more!
