The doghouse

Old boy has started wetting. Incontinence or stress?

My 12 yr old collie x has taken to trying to sleep on DS's bed during the day. Not a big problem in itself up until now, as DS is away at college, but dog is reprimanded and removed when discovered. However I came home yesterday to find a big puddle of fresh urine on the bed. He hadn't been left for that long - about four hours - and this amount of time had never been a problem before. Cleaned the bed up, aired the room and remade it today.

Went out for couple of hours tonight and barricaded all bedroom doors with dining chairs under the door handles. Returned to find the same room open, bed had been slept on and another puddle (other side of the double bed).

Once - I could put this down to an accident. But twice, on consecutive days? No sign of illness, still active, not at all subdued.

He has ( very occasionally) leaked a bit under stress, fireworks etc, but never a big puddle. And tbh, his bladder would have been pretty empty as he had free access to the garden most of the day.

Any one with any insight please?

It might be the stress of your DS being away. Really not a good idea to reprimand him as this will ramp up stress levels and make him more likely to repeat it.

Get him checked out by the vet to rule out medical reasons.

In fact, further thinking, your dog finds comfort being in your son's room, is told off for it, seeks comfort again, gets anxious about what will happen, has an accident, is desperate enough to break through barricades to get to his source of comfort, worries, has accident, gets told off for it.......

Thanks for your thoughts and replies. The dog shows no sign of anxiety - when I have found him on the bed, he is generally sprawled comfortably and not at all bothered by my presence. Just treats it as another bed for himself ??. And any reprimands have been pretty light. No dragging out or shouting. It has quite amused me tbh. He hasn't been anxious when he sees me discover the mess either.

No puddles anywhere this morning, and a normal first-thing wee.

Off to the vets I think....
