The doghouse

I understand cooked bones are dangerous, particularly chicken, as it splinters, so annoyed with people discarding their drumsticks in the woods,

Problem is, there are lots of other dangers in the woods too; discarded glass, sharp tree roots that can injure paws, branches that can splinter in a dogs' mouth if he picks one up to chew. I guess you'll have to keep him on a tight rein in the woods until you get to an open space where he can run safely.

No they don't. Lots of people don't care that leaving their rubbish behind is a selfish thing to do for many reasons. Plenty of dog owners here doing the same so it's not limited to non dog owners.

On a practical level all of my dogs have drop and leave drilled in to them (drop in case I don't see what they find in time to tell them to leave). They aren't generally scavengers but some things are too tempting. I don't want anything they come across away from home to be eaten because not only are there bones around but dirty water/dead things that can cause illness and we have had several incidents of malicious poisoning. Removing a used condom from the mouth of a friend's dog was a particular high point.

Even with rules in place you can't rely on other people you can only control your own behaviour. So regardless of the fact you shouldn't have to worry about things that shouldn't be there irl they will be.

It's annoying, yes.

I have to admit though, before I got dogs I didn't realise that about cooked chicken bones. I would happily have left food items like apple cores, chicken skin, chicken bones, thinking that wildlife would dispose of it packaging and other rubbish in the bin, obviously

Without wishing to blow my own trumpet, I'm rather well educated and clever, and I honestly didn't know this. So I would hazard a guess that in many cases, people just aren't aware of the harm they could cause

Our German Shepherd happily hoovers up cooked bones. She crunches them into nothing anyway so nothing sticks in her throat.

I find broken glass on the pavement to be a much bigger worry.

I am confused about this bone thing I must admit. I was always told as a child never to give a cooked bone to a dog but DH's parents always seem to and they don't worry about it. I asked DH and he looked at me really strangely like I was saying something totally odd.

I live on a country lane and people just throw rubbish out of their car windows as the drive along. It is as much a problem as fly tipping imo
