What does kennel cough sound like?

4.5 month old puppy has been coughing occasionally this morning - it sounds quite 'wet' and chesty, not dry and tickly IYSWIM (dd is also coughing and it sounds v similar to hers)

He has been vaccinated but I know that doesn't protect against every strain and kennel cough's been rife round here

Would it be that or some other kind of virus?

The closest sound to kennel cough is a goose's honk.

Thanks - a bit like croup then? Well it's def not that! Do dogs get normal colds?

my boy has got it at the moment - he has had it a few times, despite never setting paw in a kennel! and he is vaccinated against it too. not sure if some dogs are more prone than others.

anyway, he sounds like he has something in his throat and is trying to yack it up.

tbh I would advise a trip to the vet if he is coughing.

My dog had this recently and it sounded like something was stuck in her throat and she was trying to clear it very noisily. Didn't sound like a 'cough' really - I was quite surprised when the vet told me she had kennel cough. 'Honking' also a good description.

Yes it's a honking noise often followed by retching and it seems to go on forever day and night.

We are currently on day 8 of coughing.

There are lots of different causes of coughs in dogs. Doesn't sound like kc. Could be anything from foreign body to bacterial pneumonia. Coughs can also indicate heart disease in dogs. Best get you pup to the vets.
