Rolling in poo!

Our dog, (1yr and a collie cross something, not sure what), rolls in poo virtually every walk we do. Fox poo and cows are her favourite. She ends up needing a full on wash, and her harness has to be washed and dried before the next walk too.

Why does she do it? and how can I stop it. She's a good dog, well trained but when it comes to poo rolling she just loves it and nothing I can do will stop her. When I'm shouting no at her and running towards her she's looking at me and getting as much rolling in as she can before I reach her. Any advice is much appreciated.

My Jack and Fox Hound both do this I have been told it is to hide their scent for hunting(don't know how true this is). They mainly roll in horse poo where we walk it's a total pain in the bum and they both do the same as yours rolling as long as possible while we run towards them. The only thing we have been able to do is keep them on lead where the horses walk and let them off lead in other areas.

No advice, but I feel your pain. Of our three springers, two are poo-rollers - fox, usually. The smell is unbelievably disgusting to us, but they seem to absolutely love it. We get foxes in the garden & wherever the poo is, the dogs will find it, roll in it & come back adorned with poo around their necks. They have been known to go back out into the garden immediately after having it washed off, and roll in it all over again! Urrggh!!

My terrier loves fox poo as well and what I do now is shout at him to stop and then if he carries on I put him straight back on the lead and come home ,I'm working on the theory that he will work out that poo rolling means end of his fun . I wouldn't say its 100% working but he does only do it occasionally now whereas it was an everyday occurrence .

Your Chanel no 5 is a dog's fox poo! They do it because to them it smells good!

Our shiba does the same and she was a nightmare when the farmer treated his fields with a disgusting slurry much to the amusement of my fellow dog walkers.

They really are disgusting aren't they! Thank you for all your replies, I'll try putting her on a lead and take her home if she does it and see if it twigs rolling=walk finished.

My jack russel was prolific I started to walk her in the local park instead of the fields as I wanted her to be off lead but not roll and the local park did not seem to have any fox poo in it. I also started walking her a lot more around the streets and they seem to love all the smells on the lead. I gave in on the morning country walks as I was washing her head to foot every day and it was getting too much for me as I had a bad back. I was also pissed off with her all the time which was not fair on her.
