Sudden pain in dog..

I have a 4 year old mongrel dog he is healthy 99% of the time except for the odd being sick, he had a seizure once but the vet said she didn't think it was serious that was in April and he has been fine since. This morning he was fine, DP took him a small walk before he left for work and he was fine when he came in, I put his breakfast out but he didn't touch it which isn't unusual for him. I went to left him out in the garden 20 minutes ago and he wouldn't go I went up to get it and it looked like he couldn't move, his back leg was shaking but when I touched it wasn't any pain. He managed into the kitchen and is now on his bed ignoring food and water and a tiny piece of cheese he loves cheese and would kill for it usually.

Should I phone the vets he wags his tail when I speak to him like he usually does and his nose is wet. Plus I don't really have the money for the vets as DP started a new job this week and doesn't get paid until next month, I will take him if I have to but don't want to spend £ that I haven't got for her to tell me it's nothing again..

Im sorry but i think you should at least call the vets for some advice, acute pain can be indicative of some very serious conditions, just as it can be nothing more than a tummy ache. I understand the money situation really i do, but if you explain the situation to the vets and can at least pay something towards the costs if they think it essential that you take him down there. I used to work at a vets and they would be understanding, especially if you laid your cards on the table, and either agree to paying over time or paying at a later date, we would often just send out an invoice after a couple of weeks (depending on time of month - banking, not my PMT!) so if you can't pay for a couple of weeks it should be ok, also, rather nip in the bud now before it gets worse and you get a massive bill. I do understand really i do, but it does sound worrying.

He seems a bit better now, he went another small walk and walked round ok a little slow and not his usual pulling. He has also eaten his food and had a drink, I'm going to take him half his usual walk this afternoon and see what he is like after that then give them a call they are usually ok at seeing them the same day. Thanks for your advice.

Thats good news queen. I would be watching for any vomiting and swelling in his tummy as that with acute pain can indicate a blockage or twisted gut, both rare, but dangerous conditions that can be fatal relatively quickly. The fact that he has now eaten and been for a walk suggests you can probably rule that out. I would definately be taken a watch and wait course of action from your second post though, he might just have an upset tum or pulled muscle or something. Glad he is feeling a bit better.

I would watch him over the next few hours. If he perks up totally, I can understand you may have gone to expense for nothing. If still the same this evening I would take him along to the vet for a check up.
If he perks up and then it happens again - straight to vet.
